POSITION: Critical Minerals Editor

LOCATION: Remote (Africa preferred)

STATUS: Fulltime

START DATE: Q1 2025

TERM: 1 year

SALARY: Based on experience

OVERVIEW:

The China-Global South Project (CGSP) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit digital media initiative dedicated to exploring every facet of China’s engagement in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and throughout the Global South. CGSP produces a mix of research, data products, and daily editorial content distributed across multiple channels to a wide cross-section of high-level international stakeholders focused on the detailed mapping of Chinese global expansion and engagement. This readership includes policymakers, diplomats, journalists, scholars, and students. CGSP currently has staff in East Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

ROLE: 

CGSP seeks an experienced and knowledgeable researcher to join our team and focus on the transition minerals supply chain. The Critical Minerals Editor will collaborate closely with the Africa Editor on various projects, including research, writing, data visualization, multimedia content creation, and commissioning articles.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in journalism, academia, think tank research, or non-profit work related to critical minerals and resources. They should possess in-depth knowledge of the critical minerals supply chain, including major producing countries, refining hubs, key stakeholders, and companies. A solid understanding of China’s role in the supply chain and the geopolitical and geoeconomic factors influencing the industry is highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This dynamic position requires a blend of skills and offers opportunities for professional growth. Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Africa Editor on critical mineral projects, including research and writing, interviews, grant and project management, commissioning, and editing.
  • Assist in the development of a new data visualization product.
  • Write concise (500-750 words) news and analysis articles on critical mineral supply chain topics.
  • Develop research on underexplored issues such as the evolution of international actors in Global South mining industries, the environmental and social impacts of mining projects, and the end-to-end mine-to-battery supply chain.
  • Commission writing and research from Global South thought leaders and subject matter experts on critical minerals, energy, sustainability, environment, and social issues in resource-rich regions.
  • Contribute regular columns to CGSP’s daily newsletter and website and provide commentary for CGSP’s popular podcasts.
  • Coordinate content delivery, payments, and publication schedules for local content creators.
  • Work with journalists, editors, and media professionals to develop compelling story ideas and angles.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

SKILLS:

  • Strong track record of research and analysis on critical minerals.
  • Solid Deep understanding of the critical minerals supply chain, including key producing countries, refining hubs, and major stakeholders.
  • Extensive knowledge about China is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with multimedia reporting, including video, social media, and other digital platforms.
  • Proficiency in research tools and information sources related to the mining industry and critical minerals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in research, journalism or related field.
  • Must have a college degree (all majors welcome, but economics/development/international relations or a related discipline preferred)
  • Availability to work a standard 40-hour work week.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting with colleagues across multiple time zones.
  • Excellent English-language writing skills. Fluency in French and/or Spanish is a plus.
  • Strong research, writing, and reporting skills with the ability to produce accurate, engaging content under tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to expand skill sets and quickly learn new areas of expertise.
  • Occasional work outside regular business hours may be required.
  • Preference is given to candidates from or based in the Global South.
