Job description

Job Summary:  Seeking a compassionate and licensed clinician to serve as a Bereavement Counselor for clients and families of Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice. Optimal candidate is flexible, knowledgeable and experienced with individual, family and group counseling, with a focus on loss and grief.  Position is part time, afternoon and evening hours and occasional Saturdays for 1:1 grief counseling and support group facilitation.

Job Responsibilities for the Bereavement Counselor Per Diem includes: 

  • Comprehensively assess client grief related needs and goals, assign appropriate bereavement levels of care and establish bereavement plans of care.
  • Provide grief assessment, support, counseling and grief education to individuals and families pre-death and post-death.
  • Coordinate services to bereaved hospice family members of patients for 13 months post death.
  • Provide grief services via telephone, telehealth and in person from the home base of the Center for Grief, with visitation at the Samaritan Inpatient Centers and occasional in-home visitation.
  • Serve as a member of and resource to the Interdisciplinary Care Team by providing consultations pre and post patient death and by providing grief education in-services and professional support to staff, volunteers and community partners.
  • Refer bereaved to appropriate community mental health resources when appropriate.
  • Provide grief services to Samaritan's community service area through Samaritan’s Center for Grief Support, including grief counseling to individuals and families, facilitation of support groups and in-services on grief and loss.
  • Requires NJ LSW, LCSW, LPC or LPAT
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is desirable.
  • Ability to work with individuals, families, children, adolescents, teens and elders
  • Two years counseling experience, preferably in hospice, healthcare or psychotherapy setting, related experiences in family therapy, group therapy, mental health care or crisis intervention desirable.
  • Experience and competence with technology used for telehealth service is required
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organization, judgment, problem solving and customer service skills required
  • Experience with insurance billing for counseling services a plus.
