Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Controller is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial operations of the organization, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, and maintaining the integrity of financial systems and controls. The Controller will support the organization’s mission by ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, managing audits, overseeing budgeting, and providing strategic financial analysis to support the organization's programs and initiatives.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting & Analysis:

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
  • Provide analysis of financial performance and trends to senior management, board members, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting standards.

   Budgeting & Forecasting:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with department heads to develop, monitor, and adjust budgets as needed.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and long-term financial plans to guide the organization’s strategic decision-making.
  • Assist with grant and program budgeting, ensuring proper allocation and tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds.

Internal Controls & Compliance:

  • Implement, monitor, and improve internal financial controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure accurate recording of all transactions, adherence to policies, and compliance with legal and donor requirements.
  • Oversee annual audits and tax filings (Form 990), acting as the primary liaison with external auditors and tax preparers.

Accounts Payable & Receivable:

  • Oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, ensuring timely and accurate processing of payments and receipts.
  • Monitor cash flow and liquidity to meet the organization’s operational and strategic needs.

Grant & Donor Management:

  • Ensure compliance with all financial aspects of grants, including budgeting, reporting, and audits.
  • Collaborate with the development team to track and report on donor-restricted funds and ensure appropriate use of funds in line with donor intent.

Payroll & Benefits Administration:

  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and benefits administration.
  • Collaborate with HR to administer employee benefits and ensure timely and accurate reporting to relevant authorities.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Supervise and support the finance and accounting team, providing leadership, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative, mission-focused work environment within the finance department and across the organization.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA preferred).
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, GAAP, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with financial management systems, accounting software, especially QuickBooks, Bill.com, and advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Proven ability to manage audits, budgets, and financial reporting in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with various departments and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA certification or equivalent advanced degree.
  • Experience with grant management and reporting.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit tax regulations and Form 990 preparation.
