Job description

Bonterra exists to propel every doer of good to their peak impact. We measure that impact against our vision to increase the giving rate as a percentage of GDP from 2% to 3% by 2033. We know that this goal is lofty, but we are confident that the right technology and expertise will strengthen trust in the sector, allowing the social good industry to accelerate growth and reach peak impact. Bonterra's differentiated, end-to-end solutions collectively support a unique network of over 20,000 customers, including over 16,000 nonprofit organizations and over 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies. Learn more at bonterratech.com.

As a Director or Senior Director of Engineering, you will lead one or more engineering teams focused on delivering scalable, secure, and impactful technology for our platform areas supporting strategic philanthropy and life sciences. You'll help shape the architectural vision, ensure technical excellence, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver features and infrastructure that support Bonterra's mission. This highly collaborative role blends hands-on technical leadership, strategic planning, and people management.

You'll remain close to the work --- actively participating in design reviews, code contributions, and operational improvements --- while mentoring teams and driving high standards across engineering practices. Your leadership will be essential in helping us scale sustainably and responsibly, balancing speed with long-term maintainability.

  • Lead and mentor high-performing engineering teams in delivering core platform capabilities for customers in philanthropy and life sciences.

  • Guide architectural direction and participate in technical decision-making, code reviews, and solution design.

  • Stay close to the code — contributing hands-on when needed and helping resolve complex engineering challenges.

  • Foster a culture of inclusion, learning, and continuous improvement.

  • Partner with Product, UX, QA, SaaS Ops, and DevOps to ensure secure, performant, and user-focused solutions.

  • Drive engineering processes that uphold high code quality, efficient deployment pipelines, and reliable production operations.

  • Support release planning, capacity forecasting, and the definition of KPIs to measure engineering health and delivery outcomes.

  • Ensure security, accessibility, and compliance throughout the development lifecycle, including participating in vulnerability reviews and access controls.

  • Promote a pragmatic, AI-first development culture — identifying where AI meaningfully enhances productivity, accelerates testing, reduces toil, or unlocks smarter platform capabilities.

  • Guide teams in responsible and effective use of AI-powered tooling, ensuring human oversight remains central to quality and accountability.

Who You Are:

You’re a seasoned engineering leader who thrives on enabling teams to do their best work. You are technical enough to dive into architecture and code, but you know how to balance hands-on contribution with team leadership and strategic direction. You care deeply about engineering culture, delivering customer value, and building platforms that can scale with purpose.

You’ll love this team if you enjoy solving problems that matter, collaborating cross-functionally, and contributing to a product that powers meaningful change in the world.

You bring:

  • A proven ability to lead engineering teams in delivering secure, reliable, and scalable SaaS platforms, with a strong focus on long-term sustainability and technical excellence.

  • Deep architectural experience, including system design and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, containerization, distributed systems), paired with the ability to contribute meaningfully to code reviews or directly in production when needed.

  • Hands-on use of agentic AI development tools, such as Cursor or Windsurf and an understanding of their real- world impact.

  • A track record of guiding teams through AI adoption, helping define best practices, leading internal enablement, and assessing risks and opportunities at scale.

  • Experience modernizing legacy systems and refactoring platform components for maintainability, resilience, and performance.

  • Strong grounding in secure coding, data privacy, and compliance standards (e.g., PCI, ISO, SOC2).

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including cross-functional communication and stakeholder engagement across both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • A leadership style defined by collaboration, mentorship, and empathy, with a demonstrated ability to grow inclusive, high-performing teams.

  • Bonus: Experience in strategic philanthropy, nonprofit tech, or life sciences.

At this time, we are unable to consider candidates who require current or future sponsorship for employment authorization.
