Job description

POSITION: Economic Development Officer

JOB TYPE: Contract/Part-time (15 Hrs/Week)

LOCATION: Remote (Sexsmith)

SALARY/WAGE: $35.00-$45.00/Hour

JOB SUMMARY:
The Agency is partnering with the Town of Sexsmith for the recruitment of an Economic Development Officer for a part-time contract role.

The Economic Development Officer (EDO) will support the Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) in updating the 2019-2024 Community Economic Development Plan and implementing and monitoring the plan once it is updated. The EDO will provide expertise in advancing the Towns economic growth, business retention, and attraction, as well as assist the Committee in evaluating and updating the economic development strategies. This role requires a dynamic and highly organized professional who is skilled in strategic planning, business development, and stakeholder management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support to EDAC and Town Council
    • Assist EDAC in the development and execution of the Community Economic Development Plan
    • Provide research, analysis, and recommendations for new economic opportunities and emerging challenges facing the Town
    • Support EDAC in providing recommendations to Town Council, including the annual review and update of the economic development plan
    • Monitor the implementation of economic development initiatives, identifying successes, challenges, and areas for improvement
  • Economic Analysis and Reporting
    • Conduct economic assessments and market analyses, evaluating the current business climate and competitiveness of the Town relative to comparable municipalities
    • Provide input into the formulation of performance measures, targets, and actionable strategies for business development, retention, and attraction
    • Support EDAC in preparing annual reports and presenting updates to Town Council
  • Business Support and Relationship Building
    • Facilitate and promote partnerships between the Town, local businesses, community stakeholders, and potential investors
    • Provide direct support for business retention and expansion initiatives, ensuring the community is well-positioned to attract new investment
    • Offer guidance on emerging trends, opportunities, and best practices to businesses and stakeholders
  • Strategic Planning and Consultation
    • Assist the Committee in responding to specific requests from Council, conducting public or stakeholder consultations where needed, and advising on policy development
    • Help identify action items and strategies to address key economic development issues identified by EDAC or Council
  • Administrative Support
    • Attend EDAC meetings (minimum monthly or as required), preparing reports, agendas, and minutes, and maintaining relevant documentation
    • Coordinate and support the scheduling and logistics of meetings, including notifying members and ensuring quorum
    • Collaborate with the CAO on budgeting, ensuring financial resources are effectively allocated for economic development initiatives

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree or Certificates in Economics, Business Administration, Urban Planning, or a related field. A masters degree is an asset
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in economic development, business development, or a related field. Experience in municipal or regional economic development is highly preferred
  • Strong analytical, research, and strategic planning skills
  • Knowledge of local business dynamics, economic development strategies, and sustainability practices
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government, businesses, and community groups
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and writing skills
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with economic development software or tools is an asset
  • Understanding of municipal governance and regulatory frameworks
