We are looking for an exceptional Staff Backend Software Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This is a high-impact role focused on backend technical leadership, operational excellence, and scalable architecture. As a Staff Engineer, you will drive key initiatives that improve the reliability, performance, and extensibility of our systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional partners across Engineering, Product, Infrastructure, and Data Science to build best-in-class document verification products. This is a critical leadership role for someone who is deeply technical, highly collaborative, and passionate about raising the bar for engineering excellence.
Backend Technical Leadership: Design, implement, and own scalable, reliable backend systems. Set direction for backend architecture, advocate for engineering best practices, and lead complex technical initiatives across teams.
Operational Excellence: Define and drive strategies to improve system reliability, observability, scalability, and maintainability. Proactively identify and address bottlenecks in performance, latency, and infrastructure.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product Management, Frontend/Mobile Engineering, Computer Vision, Infrastructure, and Data Science teams to deliver impactful solutions that meet business and customer needs.
Mentorship & Engineering Culture: Act as a mentor and technical advisor for engineers across levels. Help shape our engineering culture by fostering a high-performance, collaborative, and inclusive environment.
Delivery Ownership: Lead the full development lifecycle of backend components — from ideation, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
Production Stewardship: Champion high-quality releases, participate in the on-call rotation, and drive post-incident reviews and long-term solutions to recurring issues.
Strategic Impact: Bring a customer-centric and systems-thinking mindset to decision-making. Influence the direction of the platform and backend stack in alignment with company goals and product vision.
Educational Background: BS or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience: 8+ years of backend software engineering experience, with a proven track record of technical leadership and delivering large-scale backend systems.
Technical Expertise: Proficiency in backend languages such as Java or Go, and familiarity with cloud-native technologies (AWS, Kubernetes, SQL/NoSQL databases, etc.).
Architecture & Systems Design: Deep understanding of distributed systems, data modeling, service-oriented architecture, and performance tuning at scale.
Operational Rigor: Strong experience with monitoring, alerting, and reliability tools (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Sentry), and improving SLAs and system resilience.
DevOps & SDLC: Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and test automation. Passion for improving deployment workflows and reducing manual toil.
Collaboration & Communication: Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and align across teams and stakeholders.
Leadership: Demonstrated success in a Staff or Lead Engineer role, mentoring engineers and driving broad technical initiatives.
Experience with event-driven architectures, stream processing, or asynchronous systems using technologies like SQS or Kafka.
Experience in regulated environments or security-conscious domains (e.g., fraud detection, identity verification, fintech).
Background in ML/AI integration in backend services or experience supporting Computer Vision or model-serving pipelines in production.
Contributions to operational excellence through incident management processes, blameless retrospectives, or SRE practices.
Deep familiarity with observability practices, including distributed tracing, logging, metrics, and dashboards
This represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on factors including geography, candidate experience and expertise, and other job related factors. Socure's compensation and rewards package for full time roles includes a market competitive salary, equity, comprehensive benefits, and, for applicable roles, commissions plans or an annual discretionary performance bonus.
