Job description

In search of…you!

Do you have an ear for rhythm, an eye for detail, a mind for research, and a stomach for revision? Do you love to read and love to write and love to write about what you read? Do you think your life would be better if you just had more deadlines to meet—ideally, several at once? If so, we can’t wait to hear from you.

Who we are:

West Wing Writers is a strategic communications firm that helps leaders, organizations, and brands shape the most important conversations happening today. We’re veterans of the White House, of presidential campaigns, governors' offices, and Capitol Hill. We are authors and commentators, teachers and journalists, historians and activists. All of this finds expression in our writing. We specialize in the development, expression, and amplification of ideas in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors–helping good ideas get heard, good organizations lead meaningful change, and good people make a difference in the world.

In 2023, we became employee-owned. This transfer of ownership reflects our people-centered values and culture and our team-driven, outcome-oriented approach.

Your role:

As a Director, you’ll be at the forefront of diverse writing, editing, research, and consulting projects, whether it’s crafting a soaring commencement speech or diving deep to understand the state of a particular industry, researching and writing an op-ed or advising and coaching clients before a big presentation. As a strategic thinker, talented writer, diligent researcher, and proven project manager, you’ll devise and deliver high-quality strategic counsel and client-ready copy, and ensure excellence in every project.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Submitting creative, client-ready copy with minimal editing;
  • Collaborating with client points of contact and coworkers to create the best possible product for the client;
  • Proactively contributing actionable and strategic ideas during client meetings;
  • Executing client projects with some—and, over time, with minimal—supervision;
  • Working with multiple clients, simultaneously, with excellence;
  • Staying informed on the latest developments and topics that are important to our clients' interests;
  • Editing drafts from junior colleagues;
  • Contributing to business development by delighting clients, earning repeat business, and deepening relationships with longtime clients and new ones;
  • Participating in our internship recruitment, selection, and mentoring process.

Requirements

  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of relevant experience, ideally in a communications agency, corporate, nonprofit, or public service setting;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience managing multiple projects at once, while meeting deadlines;
  • Outstanding relationship-building skills that foster trust and collaboration with clients and colleagues alike;
  • Eagerness to work with a range of clients–corporate, philanthropic, nonprofit, political–across a range of sectors and assignments;
  • Creativity, curiosity, thoughtfulness, proactivity, dependability, and professionalism;
  • Ability to accept, internalize, and implement feedback;
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Additional job requirements: This is a full-time position with general working hours from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Given the nature of client service and communications, some evening hours and weekend work will be required.
  • Office Culture: We are largely remote with hub locations in Washington DC, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Staff in these locations get together once a week in a co-working space.
  • Deadline: March 30th, with a preferred start date in the Spring of 2025.

Benefits

  • Salary: $92,500-$125,000, depending on experience;
  • Full coverage of health, dental, vision, and life insurance;
  • 15 vacation days to start (with an additional day added for each year of service, up to 20 days per year), 15 paid holidays, 10 sick days, and 2 discretionary days;
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave;
  • 3% safe harbor contribution;
  • Participation in our Employee Ownership Stock Plan (ESOP).
