Job description

Description of work

The Senior Communications Consultant for Immunization plays a critical role in advancing advocacy and program goals by crafting and managing implementation of communications strategies and execution plans. To ensure continuity and effectiveness during a staff transition, this role is required to manage high-priority initiatives and coordinate with stakeholders to deliver impactful communication strategies and products.

Purpose

The Senior Communications Consultant will provide strategic leadership and execution support. This includes managing complex global, regional and country initiatives, working closely with US-based and global colleagues, and ensuring alignment with external partners.

Objectives

The Senior Communications Consultant will support the following workstreams:

  1. Portfolio support
    1. Provide portfolio support for the technical and advocacy teams, including fielding media requests, contributing to client-wide communications, amplifying vaccine introductions, supporting leadership speeches and remarks, developing messages and Q&A, risk / issue management and fielding program delivery team support requests.
    2. Identify high-impact opportunities, including milestone moments and important policy decisions, to use organization voice in support of a range of vaccines at the global and country levels.
    3. Liaise with partners and grantees to coordinate activities and ensure message salience and alignment; lead or support communications efforts on events.
  2. Leadership Trips / Events
    1. As needed, provide high-level communications support for leadership trips, key events, and media engagements and global and regional meetings.
  3. Collaborate with partners to develop plans and campaigns for international days and data releases; determine how to use organizational voice across brand and leadership channels for moments including: World Immunization Week; WUENIC and other data and news releases.
  4. Measles advocacy and communications strategy
    1. Work with team to input communications approach and tactics into new strategy for measles vaccine.
  5. Other tasks as identified by client lead.

Scope of Work

Strategic Communications

  • Plan, lead, and execute advocacy communications strategies to generate attention, resources, and policy changes for major immunization workstreams.
  • Where available, use research-based messages and frames and align those with partners to ensure message salience and alignment and where possible, evaluate efforts to shift conversation.

Content Development

  • Draft communication materials, including talking points, event briefs, presentations, media briefs, fact sheets, press releases, and FAQs.
  • Keep apprised of new data and information and ensure that is updated across messaging and Q&A documents: ensure colleagues and consultants have access to this new information.

Stakeholder Coordination

  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and key partners, including advocacy / communications organizations, donors, and regional stakeholders, to identify opportunities to elevate immunization and then ensure alignment and consistency in plans and messaging.

Event Support

  • Provide communication support for leadership events and forums.
  • Prepare speeches, media statements, briefing documents and event-related materials and post-event reports for key engagements.
  • Travel will be included as a component for this role, including to staff client / organizational leadership at key stakeholder events, supporting efforts to showcase and elevate voice.

Project Management

  • Monitor progress across communication initiatives, ensuring timely delivery of outputs.
  • Reporting to teams on media stories and other updates as needed.
  • Work with advocacy team, global communications team and regional communications teams, with consultant support, to implement communications activities.

Knowledge Transfer and Transition

  • Document processes and create transition materials to onboard the incoming communications lead.
  • Ensure smooth handover of ongoing projects.

Deliverables

  • Strategic Communication Plans: Comprehensive strategies outlining objectives, key messages, audiences and tactics as required.
  • Content Outputs: Speeches, talking points, op-eds, social media content, media briefs, and other materials.
  • Event & Engagement Support: Briefing documents, and backgrounders for leadership trips, forums, and convenings.
  • Monthly Progress Reports: Summaries of activities, challenges, and recommendations to guide ongoing efforts.
  • Stakeholder & Partner Coordination: Messaging alignment with partner organizations, and external stakeholders to ensure cohesive advocacy.
  • Media & Thought Leadership Strategy: Planning and execution of public-facing communication efforts, including op-eds, interviews, and digital storytelling.
  • Transition Package: Documentation of ongoing initiatives, key contacts, messaging frameworks, and recommendations for continuity.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 10+ years of experience in global health communications and advocacy.
  • Expertise in developing and implementing strategic communication plans.
  • Proven track record in managing complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for diverse audiences.
  • Experience with dealing with the media and responding to media requests, briefing and staffing media interviews.
  • Familiarity with global health and ideally vaccine-related communications.
  • Experience developing and using communications tools to achieve advocacy goals and policy change at the global and/or country level.

Preferred:

  • Background in global/regional communications, particularly in Africa and South Asian regions.
  • Ability to manage cross-functional teams and drive alignment.
  • Experience in vaccine hesitancy/mis- and disinformation.

Compensation

  • This remote position is budgeted for 50% level of effort for the duration of the contract.
  • Hourly rate of $94- $112
