Job Purpose
Reporting to the Director, Development, the Development Manager will be responsible for a combination of lead and supporting activities related to the development of solar, wind, and storage projects in the central and eastern US. Activities will include working with internal subject matter experts to prospect for project sites, perform due diligence to support M&A, negotiate land agreements, acquire local, state and federal permits and approvals, complete local and state tax agreements, real estate surveys and title work, and perform other development work to support project financing. This position requires working extensively with internal subject matter experts to support origination, legal, real estate, interconnection, resource assessment, environmental and permitting, construction planning, government affairs, engineering and finance activities throughout the development lifecycle. This role is primarily remote, with travel required to support locations in the Southeast and Midwest.
Responsibilities
- Work with the development team and subject matter experts to advance existing pipeline projects in the central and eastern US.
- Work with the development team and subject matter experts to grow the project pipeline through greenfield development and through performing due diligence on M&A opportunities.
- Activities will include managing subject matter experts, evaluating construction risks/ costs, working with utilities, landowners, policy makers and other external parties to ensure that project timelines are met.
- Coordinate with our environmental / permitting team for permitting requirements such as wildlife and impact studies. Manage outside consultants’ budgets and scope as well as work with local and state permitting agencies to ensure compliance with permitting requirements.
- Attend public meetings and effectively represent the interests of the project and development team.
- Meet with landowners and community stakeholders to establish a positive, long-term relationship with host communities.
- Work with the wind and solar resources teams to install data gathering equipment and perform a thorough site assessment for wind and solar energy projects. This includes collection of wind and solar data, project layouts, geographical analysis and design recommendations.
- Assist the origination team with analyzing off-take, developing revenue plans and submissions to corporate, utilities and municipal requests for proposals.
- Work with the financial and commercial team to create and manage the financial project model. Assist in any sales origination, negotiation and execution of the PPA.
- Concisely communicate development risks and recommend mitigation strategies for pipeline and project leads.
- Partner with the engineering and construction teams to assist in project scoping, budgeting and management.
- Ensure project milestones are met through the development process. This includes compiling and organizing data for presentation to the investment committee to assess development risk versus spending at various stages of the project’s life.
- Continue to grow the project pipeline and manage multiple projects.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 years managing multiple development projects in a planning, environmental, legal, finance or construction / engineering capacity. Projects should be in power generation, utilities, or industrial real estate development.
- College degree required.
- Possess subject matter expertise in a business function directly related to the development process.
- Experience with leading or managing others.
- Financial analysis and budgeting skills, formal project management training and skills or policy analysis experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
- Ability to create forms, letters and fundamental spreadsheets using MS Word and Excel.
- Ability to create presentations in Power Point.
- Ability to perform internet-based research.
- Self-motivated with ability to work in a team and independently.
- Safe driving record, valid driver’s license.
- Able to walk over undeveloped land unassisted, travel unassisted and sit at a computer for long periods of time.
- Able to work evenings to attend meetings and community events. 25%-40% travel in region will be required during business hours in support of the position responsibilities.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing solar projects in MISO, PJM or SERC.
- Graduate degree preferred.
- Experience taking a project through financial close.
