A Day in the Life
As Senior Principal, Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR), you will be a member of the Corporate Global Health Economics, Policy, and Reimbursement (HEPR) team and an integral member of the HEOR Center of Excellence (COE). The HEPR function strives to ensure patients have timely and equitable access to Medtronic innovations by shaping healthcare policy, securing reimbursement, and demonstrating the value of our products. These activities are supported, in part, by robust HEOR evidence. A critical component of the HEOR COE is driving functional excellence research and analysis to inform health policy and reimbursement strategy, evaluate emerging payment and delivery reform proposals, and support operating units and regional teams evidence generation priorities. The Senior Principal will server as a subject matter expert in observational study methods and real-world data sources (e.g. administrative claims, electronic health records, registries) in the HEOR COE. This position reports to Vice President, HEOR and Market Access Analytics within the Corporate Global Health Economics, Policy and Reimbursement team.
The Senior Principal, HEOR will be a partner to Medtronic’s operating units (OU) and regional HEPR teams and responsible for providing strategic and methodological expertise to support the design and execution of health economic and outcomes research studies, with a specific focus area on studies involving observational methods. The Senior Principal will also collaborate with the Corporate HEPR team to develop and implement strategic reimbursement, policy, and economic value analyses.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct observational studies that provide robust economic value and clinical outcomes evidence required for internal business decisions, marketing, regulatory agency submissions, and reimbursement strategies.
- Prepare observational and economic research study results for dissemination via abstracts, posters, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Proactively with OUs and regions to identify data/evidence gaps for each priority product, and design HEOR strategies and research studies to fill gaps
- Work as a subject matter expert in a consultative role supporting OU and regional teams’ research strategies, statistical analysis plan development, research execution, and dissemination.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of US and OUS healthcare market mechanisms, payer and provider trends, health policy, medical technology, and reimbursement trends
- Direct the work of vendors and consultants to accomplish the goals of the organization with respect to data sources, research studies, and development of economic models and research studies.
- Build and continually refine an understanding of Medtronic products and brand strategies, and the value propositions supporting these strategies
- Partner across decentralized and geographically dispersed organizational structures.
- Manage projects or work streams of teams that do not report to this position.
Must Have – Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree plus 10+ years of relevant experience (or 8+ years with an advanced degree)
Nice to Have:
- Advanced degree in Economics, Epidemiology, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Science, HEOR, Health Services Research or related field
- Competency in manipulating and managing large healthcare databases (e.g. claims, EHRs) to construct analytic files for use in research studies
- Experience with a range of types of observational study designs for causal inference such as propensity score matching, entropy balancing, difference-in-difference model, instrumental variables, indirect comparisons, etc.
- Proficiency programming using statistical software (e.g. SAS, Stata, R, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex analytical techniques in a way that is understandable by non-quantitative audiences
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a matrixed team environment
- Action orientated, comfortable with ambiguity, organizational and strategic agility, strong problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and managing for clear vision and purpose.
- Project management experience; demonstrated consultative mindset
- SQL experience, preferably in a server environment (e.g. Oracle, MS SQL) with knowledge of database management, ETL, and experience in working with and analyzing healthcare data
- Demonstrated record of peer reviewed publications
- Vendor management
- Experience assessing data sources for fit-for-purpose for use
- Excellent data analysis skills, presentation skills, and a demonstrated ability to assess patterns, trends and behaviors within large health care claims populations
- Familiarity with prospective payment systems (e.g. DRGs, APCs), and reimbursement concepts
- Experience with HEOR for Medical Devices.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$178,400.00 - $267,600.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
