This role demands a deep understanding of user-centered design principles, a passion for solving user challenges, and the ability to deliver high-quality designs in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design process from concept to delivery, including research, wireframing, prototyping, and visual design.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions for the product direction, visuals, and experience.
  • Conduct user research and usability testing to iterate and refine designs based on user feedback and business requirements.
  • Create and maintain design documentation, including user flows, wireframes, mockups, and prototypes.
  • Ensure consistency and alignment with Avalara’s design system and brand guidelines while modernizing interactions.
  • Mentor and guide junior designers, sharing best practices and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and incorporate new techniques and tools into the design process.
  • Participate in and contribute to the broader UX community within Avalara, promoting best practices and knowledge sharing.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure designs are implemented to the highest standards.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in UX design, with a strong portfolio showcasing your design process and final deliverables.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or similar.
  • Experience with user research methodologies and usability testing.
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and best practices.
  • Ability to think critically and strategically while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience working in an agile environment is a plus.
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) is a plus.
  • A Bachelor’s or Masters degree in Design (perferably from IDC, NID, etc.) Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field is preferred.

What You'll Need to be Successful

To thrive as a User Experience Designer at Avalara, you will need strong proficiency in Figma and a deep understanding of the design thinking process. Your success will be driven by your ability to create user-centric designs that solve complex problems through empathy, ideation, and iterative prototyping. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, developers, and other stakeholders. A keen eye for detail, creativity, and a passion for delivering intuitive and seamless user experiences will set you apart. Your ability to balance user needs with business goals, coupled with a proactive and innovative mindset, will ensure your success in this role.
