Job description

About the Team

GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) is a dedicated global team within the GSMA, which brings together our mobile operator members, tech innovators, the development community and governments, to realise the impact of mobile in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

The Emerging Tech Initiative is a newly launched, multi-year collaboration between M4D’s Central Insights Unit (CIU) and the AI for Impact (AI4I) team at the GSMA. Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), its objectives are 1) to support innovators, including public sector and development actors and private sector (mobile operators and startups) in the development of scalable and sustainable solutions that harness AI and emerging tech for positive impact in LMICs; and 2) to identify innovations and business models that leverage these technologies for sustainable development.

About the Role

As an Operations Manager, you will be responsible for the following key tasks:

  • Provide all aspects of robust financial management, especially in regard to monthly forecasting.

  • Manage the Initiative’s procurement needs with internal and external suppliers, in adherence with the GSMA Foundation’s and donor’s regulations.

  • Lead the business planning for the team to successfully deliver on programme commitments.

  • Support individual team members by identifying projects’ priorities, dependencies, opportunities, lessons learnt, and proactively searching for a mitigation strategy and/or a specific solution to identified risks and issues.

  • Manage internal and external programme reporting.

  • Provide logistical support to the team with event planning and logistics.

About You

You have previous operations experience and are comfortable overseeing large, complex programmes. Prior work with donor-funded grants, AI and/or other relevant digital technologies is a plus.

You have a proven background in managing budgets, procurement, and external supplier relationships. Previous experience with programme/Initiative start up is a bonus.

You are able to absorb complex information and communicate effectively at all levels to both expert and non-expert audiences.

You have strong escalation management skills, to ensure that issues receive attention and mitigation support from senior stakeholders in a timely manner.

You have strong emotional intelligence and excellent cultural awareness.

Capabilities:

You are a quick learner, with strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.

You can work as part of a team, supporting other colleagues in a busy global environment, across a number of different geographical locations.

A highly motivated individual, you can manage the day-to-day requirements of a busy programme while not losing sight of other strategic priorities.

To achieve results, you communicate timely and effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, adapting to different styles and working collaboratively towards agreed outcomes for projects.
