Essential Duties:

We are looking for a Manager of Machine Learning who is responsible for leading and scaling a team of talented data scientists and machine learning engineers. To thrive in this role, you will execute well in an agile environment where we’ll depend on you to make pragmatic decisions, establish and use tight feedback loops, and take calculated risks based on your knowledge from collaborating with your peers. You’ve led teams and have managed ML experts as direct reports before, and are comfortable delivering and receiving feedback with trust and candor. You know that your success is dependent on the success of your team, and you’re committed to coach and serve. You have implemented and built MLOps tools and processes before, and have demonstrated the knowledge and technical ability to scale and support impactful ML models in production. You will report directly to the Vice President of Data Science & Engineering.

What you’ll be doing: 
  • Promote the professional growth and happiness of teammates through mentorship, coaching, and encouraging positive, fearless, and trust-based collaboration
  • Develop strong working relationships with partners in product management, product engineering, data engineering, platform engineering, PMO, Business Intelligence, HR, Finance, and Marketing
  • Be a hands-on leader of data scientists and ML engineers responsible for the development, maintenance and scalability of ML models that deliver a personalized experience throughout the MyFitnessPal user journey
  • Build and scale a ML Ops environment to empower the ML team to deploy quickly and efficiently
  • Partner with product engineering and data engineering to ensure the team adopts best practices for code development, DataOps/MLOps, testing, data quality, model maintenance and quality assurance
  • Support resolution of production issues with ML model-driven production features
  • Work with our engineering, data science, product and leadership teams in support of MyFitnessPal to solve critical user problems. This is a broad surface area and uses a variety of technologies
  • Enjoy jumping in and contributing to the codebase as a hands-on member of the data science team

Qualifications to be successful in this role: 
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or related field (PhD preferred)
  • 7+ years of experience leading and managing teams
  • 3+ years of experience managing machine learning engineers and deploying models to production
  • Proven track record of successfully developing and deploying impactful ML solutions within a specific business context (B2C preferred)
  • Applied experience deploying NLP solutions (mobile preferred)
  • Experience with generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Extensive experience in deep learning and optimizing training on large datasets
  • Solid understanding of what it takes to build production ML models at scale within consumer applications, and how to deploy and manage the entire ML lifecycle
  • Demonstrated leadership experience working effectively with engineers, data scientists, ML practitioners, and product managers to influence and drive ML and innovation into products
  • Strategic thinking and ability to incorporate larger business context into algorithm and product development
  • Excellent written communication skills and ability to present and articulate deep technical content to non-technical audiences. Ability to partner with all company functions to drive business impact
  • Experience helping other teammates grow through effective mentorship and coaching
  • Proven track record of success and impact working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment

The reasonably estimated salary for this role at MyFitnessPal ranges from $154,000 - $232,320. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience.
