Job description

The Remote Director will be responsible for line-directing the on-air productions of live, remote sporting events. He/she will work with college and university sports production departments to help provide continuity and lend their expertise to the school broadcast administration and student workforce. He/she will work in conjunction with Producers and Coordinating Producers to determine the creative and technical direction of live remote sporting event telecasts. He/she will also work in conjunction with the Event Operations department to determine technical facility and personnel needs for those telecasts. During live event productions, the Remote Director will be responsible for executing the technical production of the telecast, including following storylines and working with the event Producer to adapt the broadcast coverage plans as live events develop. The Remote Director is responsible for overseeing the technical crew for the live event productions, including providing direction, feedback, and development for those personnel.

Responsibilities:


  • Provide instruction to schools regarding all roles of television production. Candidates should have a wide range of experience in the truck, ranging from AP and AD responsibilities to producer and director responsibilities, as well as a deep understanding of technical below-the-line roles.
  • Liaise with school production partners to provide timely feedback on student-produced content.
  • Visit school production partner campuses to assess equipment compliments, discuss and recommend industry-standard production techniques, and provide a conduit for guidance for school administrative staff.
  • Plans, directs and executes on-air productions of live, remote sporting events, properly documenting assigned events.
  • Makes the on-the-spot decisions regarding what pictures and sounds will be broadcasted; interprets data and information to decide upon shots, features, and sequences.
  • Works with the Producer and Operations team to determine camera placement at each venue; plans and executes the capture of desired shots, as well as live-to-tape builds and sequences of shots.
  • Works with engineering technicians for integration of all elements in a telecast such as graphics, enhanced technology elements, switcher effects, composite music, etc.
  • Directs the technical crews and freelancers assigned to remote events; conducts production and technical meetings to define crew responsibilities and outline expectations of the crew for any given live remote sporting event.
  • Collaborates with the Crewing department to best assign production technical crews for assigned live events; provides post-event feedback and constructive criticism to the Event Operations team and Crewing department on assigned crew members.
  • Conducts research on the teams, players, storylines, trends, etc. in order to be knowledgeable on each game/sport that are assigned.
  • Provides instruction to on-air talent prior to telecasts and directs them, as required, during telecasts.
  • Makes on-the-spot editorial adjustments to coverage patterns as unforeseen situations and opportunities arise.
  • Trouble-shoots, on-the-spot, operational issues that arise during assigned live remote sporting events.
  • Ensures that all commercials and promotions for all assigned productions are correctly inserted.
  • Participates in the development of the concepts and content of assigned sporting events to reach viewers and to increase market penetration and viewership.
  • For assigned live remote sporting events, interacts with and communicates as required with conferences, leagues, college/university staff, coaches, players, etc.
  • Maintains ongoing communications with third-party resources, e.g., talent and production companies, to provide needed services, equipment and elements, assets, components, and information for assigned live remote sporting events.


Basic Qualifications:


  • A valid Driver’s License is required.
  • Knowledge of the real-time live sporting event directing processes.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate to all crew members during the live telecast.
  • Knowledge of the technical equipment involved in directing live remote sporting events.
  • In-depth live remote sporting event directing skills.
  • Minimum of 4 years of progressively complex related live sporting event directing experience.
  • Knowledge of sports and sports history.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Understanding of the financial implications of directing live remote sporting events.
  • Appreciation of popular culture, e.g., “what’s cool” and assists with defining the tastes of ESPN’s viewers.
  • Understanding of the market positioning and strategies of assigned sporting events.
  • Ability to travel to productions throughout the country.

The pay range for this recurring remote Director role is between $47,500 and $90,000.
