Description Of Job

The Work Unit:

The Colorado Manufactured Food and Hemp Safety Program is under the direction of the Manufactured Food Safety Program Manager, and is responsible for assuring compliance with the requirements of the Food Laws and Regulations of the State. These goals are accomplished through inspections, recall coordination, compliance assistance, and compliance assurance; by reviewing registration information, plan review submissions and other field-generated information for wholesale food manufacturers and storage facilities within the State. The program determines the appropriate response, which may include informal or formal inquiries, such as embargo, condemnation, seizure, injunctive relief and recalls, requesting additional field investigations, recommending and subsequently researching and developing administrative or judicial enforcement actions, and developing and negotiating civil penalties. The program is also responsible for drafting new regulations, completing State Board of Health documents, and coordinating stakeholder meetings.

Summary Of Position

The purpose of this position is to serve as an environmental protection specialist within the manufactured (wholesale) food and hemp regulatory compliance program. In this capacity, this position conducts regulatory inspections, prepares inspection reports, and assures timely and accurate compliance determinations, and issues compliance advisories as well as informal and formal enforcement actions for wholesale food and hemp manufacturing and storage facilities. This position also provides educational services which deal with the environmental/public health factors that impact wholesale food and hemp manufacturing and storage facilities, responds to consumer complaints regarding these facilities, and provides educational services and technical assistance to industry and local health agency personnel.

Minimum Qualifications:

Five (5) years of professional work experience in investigation and inspections of public health facilities, early childhood development, secondary education program involvement, vocational studies, physical science classroom settings, or closely related work related to teaching and/or environmental protection.

OR

Education And Experience

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years such as graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public health, physical or environmental sciences, environmental health, education, vocational studies and/or closely related field and o ne (1) year of public health, physical or environmental sciences, environmental health, education, vocational studies, and/or closely related field. A masters and bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public health, physical or environmental sciences, environmental health, education, vocational studies and/or closely related field will substitute for the required years of experience.

Cover Letter Requirement

Along with the application submit a cover letter, not to exceed two typewritten pages, double spaced detailing how your education and previous work experience has prepared you to excel in this job. Specific examples of how you meet the minimum and preferred competencies for the position should be included . Conditions Of Employment

  • A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment including a respirator when needed.
  • Must be willing and able to travel independently throughout the state up to 80% of the time, with up to 30% of travel being overnights, including during inclement weather.
  • Must be able to operate a State Vehicle in order to complete assigned duties of position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Adept technical writing skills
  • Experience performing environmental site assessments
  • One year inspecting child care facilities, schools, pools, retail food establishments, or similarly regulated facilities
  • Experience working in early childhood development, elementary, middle school, or high school education, physical sciences, vocational teaching, or other educational field
  • Public speaking experience
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholder groups with the demonstrated ability to collaborate and achieve consensus among multiple parties
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in/with a team
