Job description

AppOmni is looking for a talented Director of Engineering to be a leader in our growing team.

AppOmni is the industry leader in SaaS Security Management. Our company as well as our engineering team were founded and are led by veterans of security engineering, product security, and detection and response teams from major SaaS companies. That mindset carries throughout the work we do and products we build - we create security technology by security practitioners, for security practitioners.

In this role as a Director of Engineering, you will lead a set of highly skilled Engineering teams focused on building scalable, reliable data ingest and security scanning capabilities. Your responsibilities will be to lead, develop, and grow an organization of talented engineers and managers, all of whom contribute to significant components of AppOmni’s SaaS Security Posture Management (SSPM) platform.

The Director of Engineering is expected to deliver on complex initiatives across multiple areas of the AppOmni product, bringing to bear their own technical expertise in software architecture, development, implementation, and devops best practices. This role has the opportunity to deliver a meaningful impact on the security of SaaS-stored data worldwide through innovative technology solutions and effective engineering leadership.

Your work will have a direct and meaningful impact on securing our customers and their data - which may include your own data! These are challenging engineering problems in an exciting part of the security industry that do not yet have defined solutions. Successful candidates will have a history of strong problem solving skills and the ability to think creatively combined with significant past engineering management experience.

Unique Opportunities for Impact

  • Scale - we support 30% of the Fortune 100 and have our sights set on more. These are huge organizations for which scale is of the utmost importance, and we need to support that. The Posture organization needs to deliver robust features that work seamlessly while operating at a scale that few tools can support.
  • Customer satisfaction - AppOmni delivers a complex product, supporting other complex products. We support 50+ SaaS applications and a developer platform, all of which have their own unique behavior, constraints, and interfaces. We seek a leader who has not only a mind for engineering excellence, but an eye for what constitutes a "delightful" experience for an enterprise security product. A successful leader will be able to collaborate with talented engineers, PMs, and security experts to deliver best-in-class capabilities.
  • Predictable, High Quality, and Reliable delivery - the ideal leader for this role will be passionate about collaborating with engineering managers and technical leads from their organization in order to structure, mentor, and optimize engineering teams for rapid feature delivery around three key pillars: Predictability, Quality, and Reliability. Engineering leaders at AppOmni are expected to be technically competent in their areas of ownership and able to engage with their teams to help drive continuous improvement across these pillars in an intentional, data-driven way.
  • Fully Remote, Global Team - this leader must be able to productively manage and collaborate with employees who are fully remote, and work with global teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Take ownership and drive innovation to enable your engineering organization to deliver high-quality, high-performance code
  • Establish and continually improve development and team processes that yield efficient results in day-to-day engineering operations
  • Advance the organization’s monitoring and alerting capabilities and drive operationalization of alerting tools to improve reliability
  • Provide mentorship to managers and individual contributors via 1:1s and intentional career planning
  • Develop continuous improvement opportunities for Engineers and Managers within the organization
  • Collaborate with internal teams to identify opportunities for integration, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing
  • Be a technical leader within the broader company and raise the bar for performance and quality in a complicated space

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience building and leading high-performing engineering teams working on large projects
  • An empathetic leadership mindset of proactively setting goals, giving feedback, and cultivating teamwork, delivery, and performance from skilled engineers with a variety of working styles and backgrounds
  • Familiarity with working in an agile environment focused on rapid delivery and iteration
  • Experience working in a DevOps environment and familiarity with tools such as: Kubernetes, Terraform, Prometheus, and Grafana. Experience using APM tooling and basic CI/CD tooling is also expected.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and experience using them in a remote-first environment
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Python, Django, and working with SaaS applications and backend SQL databases. Any prior experience with building enterprise security products is a plus but not a requirement
  • 4+ years of Software Engineering experience as a hands-on engineer with successively greater responsibility and impact
  • 5+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager leading successively larger teams and/or organizations
