Job description

Note: APA operates on a 37.5-hour work week with one hour lunch breaks each day. APA sets salaries based on several considerations, including years of relevant experience, level of education, and previous staff and/or governance experience at APA.

The Metadata Content Specialist (MCS) analyzes and synthesizes content from scholarly publications and other sources and utilizes excellent expository writing skills to create records for the APA PsycTests database in a deadline-based environment.

The MCS understands the psychometric concepts and methodologies used in the psychological, behavioral, or social sciences. They crucially understand the Association's proprietary controlled vocabulary and its application in the indexing of interdisciplinary and international research in the scholarly publications covered.

The MCS is also responsible for the quality control of records prior to their release into the PsycTests database. They also help to develop and refine processes and automated tools to enhance record quality and maximize processing efficiency.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in psychology or a related behavioral or social science field, with significant course work in psychology methods.
  • Two years' experience in online production in a scholarly publication environment is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs record creation and quality assurance activities across APA's online discovery solutions as assigned.
  • Selects articles, books, and chapters, and tests from scholarly publications in psychology and related fields from English and non-English publications.
  • Creates records representing the content of documents or the content of tests/assessments, providing users with accurate descriptive information and precision search and retrieval. Such processes may require decision making and problem solving beyond that prescribed in the guidelines or that must be fast-tracked to meet deadlines.
  • Performs Quality Assurance reviews of basic records created by staff, freelancers, and outsource vendor(s) in various databases.
  • Performs duties that support record production, such as templating, contributing to machine-aided indexing, developing and testing quality control methodologies.
  • Collaborates with other staff across APA Publishing and the wider Association on various projects and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
