Job Description
The Director of Claims, reporting to the Senior Director of Insurance & Claims, is responsible for independent
management and decision making for claims in assigned lines of coverage and within parameters of assigned
financial authority. Relevant lines of coverage may include Professional Liability, Workers’ Compensation, Auto,
Property and Cyber. The Director of Claims may also provide technical and strategic guidance to other members of the Claim Team including Claim Manager, Claim Analyst and Claim Intake Specialist. The Director will have direct people management responsibilities.

Responsibilities
- Directs employees by supporting, coaching, training, assisting with time management and performing evaluations; should conduct regular meetings with all direct reports.
- Leads the planning and execution of the claims management strategy, aligning department objectives with organizational priorities. Develops, communicates, and implements best-in-class claims practices that optimize outcomes and minimize total cost of risk.
- Provides oversight and strategic guidance on high-severity, high-complexity claims. Sets standards for appropriate reserving and settlement strategies, leveraging advanced financial authority to support business objectives.
- Directs legal strategy in partnership with external counsel to ensure optimal positioning for dispute resolution and litigation management. Evaluates the performance of legal partners and recommends changes to improve results and reduce legal spend.
- Establishes relationships with 3rd Party Administrator (TPA) and carriers, ensuring performance aligns with policy terms and organizational goals.
- Oversees quarterly reserve reviews with carriers, driving alignment with financial and risk targets.
- Leads training programs for business unit leaders on claims reporting protocols and policy coverage, to ensure consistent risk handling.
- Oversees claims system accuracy and reporting standards to support audits and executive reporting.
- Leads the designs and delivery of claims reporting and trend analysis for leadership, integrating carrierprovided loss data to identify adverse patterns, quantify financial impact, and drive enterprise-wide risk mitigation strategies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Able to work and lead well under pressure
- Excellent communication (written and verbal), evaluating, influencing, negotiating, listening, and interpersonal skills to effectively develop productive working relationships with internal/external peers and other professionals across organizational lines
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required.
- Law Degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience handling 3rd party and/or 1st party claims for carrier, TPA or self-insured institution required
