Job description

About BuzzFeed, Inc.

BuzzFeed, Inc. (Nasdaq: BZFD) is home to the best of the internet with a mission to spread joy and truth. Across entertainment, news, food, pop culture, and commerce, our brands drive conversation and inspire what audiences watch, read, and buy now — and into the future. Born on the internet in 2006, BuzzFeed, Inc. is committed to improving it: providing trusted, quality, brand-safe entertainment to hundreds of millions of people; making content on the internet more inclusive, empathetic, and creative; and inspiring our audience to live better lives.

Business Area: Content

Job Category: Editorial

Hourly: $20.00 an hour

Union Status: Non-Union

BuzzFeed Inc. is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. We reserve the ability to adjust the final compensation for this role based on the final candidate's experience, skillset, certifications, and geography.

The Role

The BuzzFeed Fellowship is a year-long program for aspiring and hungry writers eager to hone their skills, and to learn by doing. The program is a crash course in creating editorial content that consistently captures readers’ attention, pushes the cultural conversation forward, and reaches a massive audience.

Fellows will work with and learn from members of the BuzzFeed team — some of the smartest, weirdest, most creative, and most viral creators out there. This is the perfect opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in digital media. You won’t be running errands for senior staff, or transcribing someone else’s interviews, you will be pitching ideas, taking assignments, brainstorming, collaborating, and writing dozens of stories that will be published to BuzzFeed.com and promoted across our social channels.

As an SEO Editorial Fellow, you’ll be responsible for writing and optimizing evergreen and timely content that drives search traffic. You’ll learn the ins and outs of SEO best practices, data-driven content strategy, and how to create articles that people and Google love. You’ll embed with the SEO team and collaborate closely with editors, writers, and strategists across BuzzFeed Media.

The Fellowship is fun and inspiring, but also fast-paced and challenging.

This is a paid position $20/hour. The Fellowship allows candidates to work fully remote in select locations. If you’re local to NY or LA, there will also be opportunities to work alongside us in our Flatiron and Hollywood offices.

The deadline to apply for this Fellowship is June 20, 2025 by 5pm EST.  All application materials must be submitted when you apply.  The intended (and tentative) start date for this Fellowship is July 22nd, 2025.

You Will

  • Pitch, research, and write engaging SEO-driven content across various topics (news, entertainment, lifestyle, viral trends, etc.) — both timely and evergreen.
  • Collaborate with editors and writers to ensure content meets SEO best practices while maintaining BuzzFeed’s unique voice and tone.
  • Use SEO tools and data to identify new content opportunities.
  • Update and refresh existing evergreen articles to maintain traffic and search rankings.
  • Collaborate with editors and writers to ensure content meets SEO best practices while maintaining BuzzFeed’s unique voice and tone.

You Have

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write quickly, clearly, and engagingly on a variety of topics.
  • Curiosity and excitement about digital media, SEO, and content strategy (no formal SEO experience required — we’ll teach you!).
  • A genuine, wide-eyed love of pop culture and internet trends in all their forms, especially TV, movies, entertainment, and lifestyle.
  • Comfort working with data and willingness to dig into numbers to understand what’s working (and why).
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • A collaborative, proactive attitude and an eagerness to learn and grow.
A track record of meeting deadlines and handling multiple projects at once.
Nice-to-Haves
  • Familiarity with SEO and tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, Moz, Google Trends, or Google Search Console.
  • Experience writing for online audiences (college newspaper, personal blog, internships, etc.).
  • Interest in evergreen content formats like how-tos, explainers, lists, and roundups.
To Apply

Please submit the following when applying to be an SEO Editorial Fellow:

  • Instead of a formal cover letter, please include a few short paragraphs about what topics you’d want to write about for BuzzFeed, and what interests you about the content BuzzFeed makes.
  • Create a BuzzFeed.com/community profile, and create 1-2 evergreen posts that reflect your voice and interests. These can be “best” lists, personal rankings, explainers, or anything else that would be as relevant and fun to read a year from now as it is today! Please submit articles or lists, rather than quizzes! When you submit your posts, include “This is for the Editorial Fellowship.” in the description. You’ll be asked to provide the links to your posts when you complete the application. SO, PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR COMMUNITY POSTS PRIOR TO COMPLETING THIS APPLICATION!
  • P.S. We love AI tools (seriously, they’re the best), but for your edit test, we want to hear YOUR voice, not ChatGPT’s.
  • Provide links to your public social media accounts.
  • Attach a resume — keep it to one page!
