Job Description

As an Actuarial Associate in our healthcare organization, you’ll be part of a collaborative team that uses data and analytics to improve the health and well-being of our members. Under the guidance of experienced actuaries, you’ll apply your knowledge of mathematics, statistics, and business principles to support critical functions such as pricing, valuation, healthcare economics, and financial forecasting.

In this role, you will:
• Assist in developing and refining actuarial models that inform health plan design and pricing.
• Support the evaluation of healthcare programs to ensure they deliver value and improve outcomes.
• Collaborate with teams across the organization—including Network Management, Underwriting, Sales & Marketing, Finance, and Clinical Operations—to provide actionable insights and recommendations.
• Contribute to forecasting and financial planning efforts that help guide strategic decisions.

What You’ll Do 

  • Analyzes financial, statistical and mathematical data and performs actuarial calculations.

  • May assist in the determination of pricing, reserves and/or cash flow projections.

  • Assists in performing rate studies used in determining rate adequacy.

  • Assists in actuarial research, experience studies, and statistical analyses and calculations.

  • Provides support to senior analysts or actuaries as required.

  • Retrieves and validates data for rate filings and actuarial models.  Assists senior staff in the building of model enhancements and determines reasons for changes to calculated factors. 

  • Distributes established reports and responds to inquiries. 

  • Investigates trends and anomalies.

  • Supports Enterprise Risk Management.

  • Provides analytic support for corporate and departmental projects.

  • Is a participant in good standing in the Actuarial Development Program

What You Bring 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics or related field

  • 0-2 years of experience in related field;

  • At least 1 exam completed towards the eventual attainment of the Associate of the Society of Actuaries designation.

Bonus Points

  • Experience working with healthcare insurance actuarial pricing teams, especially in ACA pricing.

  • Proficiency in SQL and Excel

  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage time-sensitive projects

  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, leveraging business and industry knowledge to drive change and mitigate complex risks

  • Adaptive and versatile learner, with the ability to communicate effectively and react quickly to changing business dynamic.

Salary Range

At Blue Cross NC, we take great pride in a fair and equitable compensation package that reflects market-price and our starting salaries are typically planned near the middle of the range listed. Compensation decisions are driven by factors including experience and training, specialized skill sets,  licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. Our base salary is part of a robust Total Rewards package that includes an Annual Incentive Bonus*, 401(k) with employer match, Paid Time Off (PTO), and competitive health benefits and wellness programs. 

*Based on annual corporate goal achievement and individual performance.
