The Senior Manager, U.S. GAAP Accounting plays a key leadership role in overseeing all aspects of the accounting function, including period-end close, general ledger and chart of accounts maintenance, and audit preparedness. This role provides critical financial data to support business analysis and decision-making, while ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with U.S. GAAP. The Senior Manager is a proactive leader in a collaborative team environment, actively coaching and developing staff to maintain a high-performing function, with a strong focus on maintaining robust internal controls, identifying opportunities for process improvement, and implementing best practices. The role manages relationships and is the primary liaison with external auditors, benefit plan auditors, and other third-party vendors. The role will also manage and support system implementation and enhancement initiatives across the finance organization, ensuring solutions are aligned with accounting principles, reporting requirements, and operational goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the day-to-day general accounting needs for the U.S. operations
- Serve as a subject matter expert in U.S. GAAP, with the ability to interpret and implement new accounting standards, as well as develop, communicate, and enforce both global and local accounting policies
- In collaboration with the Director of U.S. Accounting, assist in the strategic direction of the Finance department across its responsibility for accounting closing and reporting, acquisition accounting, internal controls and is accountable for translating that strategy into specific actionable plans
- Oversee the parent company’s financial statement audit, ensuring timely completion, and maintaining regular communication with the VP of Finance and the Director of U.S. Accounting
- Based on best practices, identify and manage process improvement initiatives to streamline financial operations, enhance efficiency, and support Sage’s evolving business needs. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and integration of finance initiatives across the organization, including the planning, preparation, and implementation of new financial systems.
- Drive enhancements to financial applications to improve efficiency and automation in the month-end close and financial reporting processes. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize operational workflows and maximize the functionality of the financial reporting and planning system
- Oversee the management and governance of the chart of accounts, including the creation and maintenance of new accounts. Communicate changes with downstream cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration with other information systems to ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity in financial reporting
- Drive improvements in month-end closing processes, enhance the accuracy and efficiency of account reconciliations, and implement accounting best practices across the organization
- Provide strong leadership and foster accountability within the general accounting team by coaching and mentoring staff, removing barriers, and enabling access to the appropriate tools and resources for optimal performance
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and implementing opportunities to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency
- Collaborate with and provide essential support to cross-functional departments, including Trade and Royalty Payments Processing, Payroll, Financial Planning & Analysis, Tax, and Financial Systems, to ensure seamless financial operations
- Provide ad hoc support to the Director of U.S. Accounting and VP of Finance, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND
EDUCATION
This may include, but is not limited to, the following:
- Minimum of 7+ experience leading accounting or finance functions within complex international operations, or relevant and equivalent experience.
- BA or BS, in accounting or finance, desired, graduate degree in accounting a plus; or equivalent and relevant experience.
- Active California Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in good standing.
- Public accounting experience a plus
- Expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls over financial reporting.
- Substantial leadership experience, ideally managing remote and hybrid teams.
- Excellent communication skills and confidence in the ability to navigate through challenging matters.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and highly agile when faced with new and unfamiliar matters.
- Detail oriented, analytical, and ability to multitask in fast paced and dynamic environment.
- Must be able to express accounting concepts clearly both orally and in writing in a way which can be understood by both specialists and non-specialists.
- Well organized, excellent at planning ahead, able to adjust to changing priorities and manage a team to deliver on time and to a high professional standard.
