About the Role:

The Director of Tax will play a pivotal role in shaping the tax strategy for our retail trade organization, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations. This position is responsible for overseeing the preparation and filing of tax returns, as well as managing audits and inquiries from tax authorities. The Director will lead a team of tax professionals, providing guidance and support to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Additionally, this role will involve analyzing tax implications of business decisions and transactions, contributing to the overall financial strategy of the company. Ultimately, the Director of Tax will safeguard the organization’s financial health by minimizing tax liabilities and optimizing tax positions.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, And Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee corporate income tax compliance, planning, and reporting to ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Manage indirect tax compliance (sales & use tax, occupancy tax, and other transaction taxes), including audits and regulatory changes.
  • Lead the preparation and review of tax provisions under ASC 740, including deferred tax calculations and financial statement disclosures.
  • Direct the tax filing process, ensuring timely and accurate submission of all tax returns.
  • Develop and implement tax strategies to minimize liabilities and maximize tax efficiency.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes impacting corporate tax and provide guidance to leadership.
  • Collaborate with internal finance, accounting, and legal teams to align tax strategies with business objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Taxation
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with 1-2 years of public company experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in corporate tax, with expertise in partnership tax compliance and tax provision
  • Proficiency in tax software and reporting systems such as Avalara, Vertex, TDS, etc.
  • US and Global transaction tax experience
  • Solid understanding of Contract Law, particularly as it applies to tax-related matters
  • Excellent oral and written communication/presentation skills, including development of reporting packages
  • Preferred locations: Georgia and Alabama

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at a time
