Job description

Position Summary: The Virtual Senior Center program as part of Selfhelp Community Services is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Music Instructor to lead a virtual one-hour weekly class on Fridays focusing on Broadway musicals and operas, spanning from the late 1900s through today. This is an exciting opportunity to educate and inspire Older Adults by exploring iconic musical productions, renowned performers, and the historical and cultural context that shaped them.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Design and facilitate engaging, informative weekly interactive classes focused on Broadway musicals and operas
  • Cover a wide range of shows and topics from the late 20th century through today
  • Introduce students to major composers, lyricists, performers, and key historical movements
  • Lead interactive discussions on characters, themes, and storylines of select musicals/operas
  • Incorporate multimedia (video/audio clips, slides, etc.) into lessons to enhance learning
  • Prepare basic lesson outlines and maintain consistency in class quality
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and interactive learning environment
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure class materials are appropriate and accessible
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Adhere to organization’s standards by completing annual mandatory trainings in a timely manner on topics including – but not limited to – Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, IT Security Awareness, Compliance, OSHA, HIPAA and any other training the organization may deem necessary in regards to regulatory compliance or good business practices.
  • Supports organization’s mission by striving for excellence in all aspects of their job with a focus on positive interpersonal relationship with co-workers.
  • Adheres to the organization’s policy in regards to absenteeism and appearance and health and safety standards.

 Salary Range: $80 - $90 per hour/session

Job Competencies & Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge and passion for musical theater and opera, particularly Broadway productions from the late 1900s to the present
  • Experience teaching, leading discussions, and giving presentations
  • Comfort with using technology to show video/audio clips and other media during class
  • Ability to engage Older Adult learners of varying levels of musical and theatrical knowledge
  • Able to work well with the administrative team

Working Conditions/Physical Demand:

  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
