Senior Database Administrator

 

Location: Remote

 

Employment Type: Full-Time

 

Compensation:       $120,000-$149,500 (Range applies to US candidates only) + Benefits/Variable Comp/Equity - Range may vary based on experience.

Summary

The Senior Database Administrator (DBA) will oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the OneStream databases that support our platform. This role requires expertise in database performance tuning, backup and recovery strategies, and high availability solutions. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience managing and tuning SQL server environments, expertise with other database solutions, and experience working in a SaaS model. It is essential for this candidate to have strong collaboration skills that match their technical expertise to ensure that the OneStream platform and the entire ecosystem are aligned.  This position requires a strong knowledge of modern software design principles, concepts, and best practices that align with database modeling. The candidate will mentor other engineers, influence database-focused decisions, and help evaluate other database options.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, evaluate and maintain SQL server databases to ensure a large-scale, reliable, maintainable, and high-quality infrastructure.
  • Optimize database performance through indexing query tuning and resource monitoring.
  • Collaborate with our Cloud Engineering team to design and implement backup strategies, disaster recover processes and failover systems.
  • Ensure database security by managing access controls and performing regular audits.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues in production and non production environments.
  • Provide insight and leadership on database impact for key features that will be designed.
  • Collaborating with developers, Cloud engineers and IT teams to improve application performance.
  • Work with the Quality Engineering team on performance focus, testing and analysis.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to staff and senior level engineers, and contribute to technical discussions which positively impact the product.
  • Develop and implement a framework for monitoring, optimizing and allocating data storage for database services.
  • Maintains database performance by identifying and resolving production and application development problems; calculating optimum values for parameters; evaluating, integrating, and installing new releases; completing maintenance.
  • Collaborate with peers and cross-functional teams to set requirements, align goals, manage dependencies, resolve difficult technical issues and drive product direction.
  • Automate database administration tasks using Powershell or other scripting languages.
  • Provide technical engagement to ensure efforts are properly planned to meet deadlines.

     

    Required Education and Experience

    • 10+ years hands-on experience architecture, designing, and managing Microsoft SQL Server.
    • Ability to analyze and communicate technical issues, lead discussions, and influence decisions.
    • Exposure to deploying and managing database solutions in a public cloud, preferably Microsoft Azure.
    • Expert in performance tuning, index optimization, automation, and auto-scaling SQL databases.
    • Advanced knowledge of SQL (functions, stored procedures, triggers, query optimization, data modeling, XML).
    • Expert in maintenance plans, disaster recovery, availability and handling failover events.
    • Strong understanding of networking and storage as it relates to overall database performance optimization. Experience analyzing issues from the application to database tier.

     

    Preferred Education and Experience

    •  Working knowledge of Linux.
    • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL.
    • Experience working on high-performance computing, batch, or big data environments.
    • General knowledge and experience with PowerShell, Bash, Shell or other scripting languages.
    • Experience architecting, deploying and managing databases in a container environment such as Kubernetes.
    • Any relevant certification such as MCSA: SQL Server 2012, MCSA: SQL Server 2016 Database Administration, MCSE Data Platform Solutions Expert, MCSA: SQL Database Administration (540), MCSA: SQL Database Development, MCSE: Data Management and Analytics and MTA: Database.

     

     Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    •  Adept at conducting research into software-related issues and products.
    • Must be able to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Solid experience and knowledge of software security best practices, data privacy practices and laws.
    • Strong product sense coupled with an ability to take a developer’s perspective.
    • Strong analytical skills to identify and resolve complex technical challenges.
