Job Description

Role Overview:

WSP is seeking an Intermediate Process / Backfill Engineer to join our Mine Water Team in South Africa.Our expertise in underground backfill and dewatered mine tailings for surface disposal includes laboratory testing, conceptual to feasibility-level studies, engineering design, construction, commissioning, and project management for clients across the local and global mining sectors. Additionally, we offer engineering design solutions for ore handling systems, mine dewatering, pipeline services, shaft infrastructure, ventilation, and other underground mine infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform conceptual, feasibility, and detailed engineering design work.
  • Conduct fieldwork, data analysis, and engineering calculations.
  • Develop and write equipment specifications.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Prepare and review technical reports and proposals.
  • Perform project management duties as required.
  • Conduct audits and troubleshooting of mine infrastructure systems.
  • Provide on-site supervision in construction settings when required.
  • Ensure compliance with South African Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) regulations and WSP policies.
  • Travel to project sites as required.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical, Metallurgical, or Mining Engineering.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in mining-related consulting or operations.
  • Experience in backfill design, mine infrastructure, tailings processing, or dewatering systems.
  • Understanding of cement chemistry and flocculant applications would be advantageous.
  • Professional Engineering registration with ECSA (or eligibility for registration).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and engineering design software.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite and general computing applications.
  • Demonstrates a safety-first approach.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Excellent teamwork and leadership capabilities.
