Job description

Reuters is seeking a developer to lead the creation of web applications that cover climate change and extreme weather with visuals, data and design.

The position calls for an experienced developer eager to address one of the world’s most pressing issues. The successful candidate would partner with coders on our News Applications Desk to create long-running, evergreen features that track heat waves, storms and other environmental disasters. Automating maps will be central to the job.

The News Applications Desk draws on talent from across the company to create dashboards, databases and automated systems that benefit clients, inform readers, empower reporters and serve the public interest. The initiative aims to publish timely, trustworthy resources that lead to greater understanding of world’s most pressing issues. 

This work requires blending skills from computer programming and product design with background experience in journalism. Strong applicants will bring experience in more than one of those areas. Experience launching data-driven products for a lay audience is presumed. Creativity, ambition and delivery on deadline are prized.

About the Role

As News Applications Developer, you will:

  • Create data pipelines that gather, refine, enrich and publish weather and climate data
  • Develop data visualizations and interactive maps for the general public
  • Experiment with the use of artificial intelligence and other open-source technology
  • Make our base map available for other graphics and story formats

  • Designed, developed and deployed successful data-driven applications for the general public
  • Automated the collection and refinement of raw data feeds for distribution as breaking news  
  • Have experience mapping weather and climate data
  • Have previous experience in journalism or developing projects for news organizations.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.

For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $88,200 - $163,800.

This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance.
Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
