Job description

Network Engineer 

ROLE 

We need an experienced Sr. Network Engineer to support the IRS' Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Technology Operations Center (TOC). The IRS-CI TOC is responsible for securing and modernizing the technical infrastructure that underpins federal criminal investigations, including internal, external, cloud, and wireless networks. In this role, you will lead enterprise network engineering efforts to streamline operations, eliminate redundancies, and enhance performance across a wide range of IRS-CI environments. Your work will help establish a standardized, compliant, and mission-ready network architecture that supports both internal agency functions and secure interagency communication. RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct full-scale assessments of CI’s internal, external, wireless, and cloud network environments for performance, security, and reliability. 

  • Develop and maintain Network Assessment and Security Reports, including recommendations for optimization and compliance with NIST, DISA, IRS, and CISA standards. 

  • Redesign and implement approved enterprise network topologies, utilizing existing equipment and integrating modern technologies. 

  • Develop and execute test plans, patch plans, and upgrade strategies for all networking hardware and software components. 

  • Analyze and maintain firewall configurations, load balancing solutions (e.g., F5, DNS), and access segmentation technologies in line with IRS standards. 

  • Evaluate and recommend network monitoring tools such as Cisco ACI, Forescout, Infoblox, and LiveAction. 

  • Lead efforts to complete network heat mapping, AP placement diagrams, and optimization of wireless performance at IRS posts of duty. 

  • Manage network ticketing and change requests, and respond to support incidents using CI's change management process. 

  • Support DNS/DHCP configuration and remediation activities using tools such as Microsoft and Infoblox. 

  • Provide network documentation including diagrams, hardware/software inventories, and configuration guides. 

  • Deliver engineering support for ASCA compliance, POAM remediation, and CSIRC-directed security vulnerability resolution. 

  • Prepare and present status updates, technical reports, and risk documentation to stakeholders and IRS technical leadership. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Active IRS MBI Public Trust – Strongly preferred 

CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure, CCIE Enterprise Wireless, and CCDP certifications required. 

  • ​​​​​​​8+ years of experience in network engineering with 5+ in federal or highly regulated environments 
  • Expertise in enterprise-grade firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless systems (e.g., Cisco, Fortinet, F5) 

  • Strong understanding of NIST 800-53, FISMA High, and federal security compliance frameworks 

  • Experience with network analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark), heatmapping, and performance tuning 

  • Familiarity with Agile project delivery and tools such as Jira and SharePoint 

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and presentation skills 

EDUCATION  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
