Position Overview:
The Senior Network Engineer is a critical technical role responsible for the design, implementation, management, and optimization of the enterprise wired and wireless network infrastructure within a complex, secure federal law enforcement environment.This position oversees network engineering workflows, resolves advanced technical issues, and manages junior network engineering staff as needed. This requires deep expertise in network technologies and federal compliance standards, including FISMA High, NIST, and IRS-specific security policies.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead comprehensive network assessments covering internal, external, cloud, and wireless environments to evaluate efficiency, performance, security, and compliance.
Develop and deliver detailed Network Assessment Reports, Security Assessment Reports, and Network Comparison Reports with actionable recommendations to optimize network infrastructure, reduce redundancies, and improve security posture.
Design, engineer, and implement a secure, operational, and maintainable network architectures aligned with CI Standard Network guidelines, leveraging existing equipment and emerging technologies.
Develop upgrade, patch, and testing plans for all network equipment; ensure timely application of security patches per government timelines.
Evaluate and recommend network monitoring tools and manage their deployment and maintenance.
Manage firewall engineering, Unified Access Segmentation, and load balancing solutions to optimize enterprise network security and performance.
Oversee lifecycle management of network hardware and software, including switches, routers, wireless access points, firewalls, and virtual network components.
Provide expert troubleshooting and resolution for complex network issues across the entire CI network infrastructure.
Monitor daily network health and respond promptly to support requests, ensuring minimal downtime and business continuity.
Coordinate equipment shipping, installation, and refresh activities across multiple CI locations.
Maintain comprehensive network documentation, including network diagrams, hardware/software inventories, configuration changes, and operational procedures.
Support federal regulatory compliance efforts, including ASCA, POAM remediation, and Cybersecurity Incident Response Center (CSIRC) vulnerability mitigation.
Utilize advanced network analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark) to perform deep packet inspection and support network troubleshooting.
Lead or participate in project management activities related to network engineering, including reporting, risk tracking, and schedule management using Agile and government project management tools (e.g., Jira).
Provide knowledge transfer, training, and mentorship to junior staff and network engineering teams.
Ensure strict adherence to all federal security, privacy, and access requirements, including HSPD-12, FISMA High, and IRS policies.
Communicate effectively with government stakeholders, providing timely reports, briefings, and recommendations.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Between 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in senior-level network engineering roles.
Active CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure, CCIE Enterprise Wireless, and CCDP certifications are required.
Proven expertise in designing and managing complex enterprise wired and wireless networks in secure or federal environments.
Strong knowledge of network protocols, routing, switching, VPNs, firewalls, wireless technologies, load balancing, and network security best practices.
Demonstrated experience with network lifecycle management, including equipment upgrades, patching, and compliance with federal cybersecurity mandates (NIST, FISMA, IRM, CISA).
Experience with advanced network monitoring and analysis tools such as Cisco ACI/DNA/ISE, Forescout, Infoblox, Aruba Airwave, and Wireshark.
Familiarity with Agile project management methodologies and tools such as Jira.
Ability to produce clear, thorough technical documentation and reports.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with experience managing or mentoring technical staff.
Ability to work remotely and coordinate effectively across multiple locations and teams.
Must be eligible for and maintain required federal security clearances, including successful completion of high-risk background investigations and drug screening.
