We’re a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works with election officials across the country, as well as tech platforms like Google and TikTok, nonprofit groups like Hispanic Federation and DoSomething, academic institutions like Princeton University and University of Florida, and workplaces like Starbucks and Salesforce to help voters whenever and wherever they need it.

Democracy Works is committed to diversity and inclusion in everything we do and aspires to have a team that's representative of the voters we serve.

The impact you’ll make:

As a key member of the Marketing & Communications team, the Content Writer will  reach millions of voters with clear and actionable voting guidance for thousands of elections every year. For our audience of partners, you’ll craft content to ensure they can effectively use our tools. You’ll also collaborate cross-functionally to develop content that establishes Democracy Works as a thought leader in our various fields. This position bridges our research team's electoral expertise with our public-facing communications, transforming complex information into accessible voting guidance and compelling content narratives.

As a part of the team, you will:

  • Research and create high-quality written content including voter guides, FAQs, notifications, and other voter-facing materials.
  • Collaborate with Election Research, Government Affairs, Partnerships & Data, Product and Engineering teams, and other internal and external stakeholders, to tell the Democracy Works story.
  • Simplify complicated, difficult-to-understand voting requirements and election information into clear, actionable written guidance.
  • Write and curate support articles and tutorials that assist partners in understanding and effectively utilizing our products, features, and functionality.
  • Adhere to Democracy Works’ style guide and brand guidelines to maintain consistency in all external facing content.
  • Write, edit, format, and publish written content for multiple platforms, such as websites, email marketing, social media, blogs, thought leadership content, and other marketing and communications materials that establish Democracy Works as an authority in the civic technology space.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for multi-departmental content initiatives, ensuring alignment on messaging, deadlines, and delivery.
  • Translate data insights and findings from internal tools and research into compelling narratives for external publication, showcasing the organization’s unique contributions to the field.
  • Edit and proofread content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and proper grammar.
  • Manage content calendars and meet deadlines for various projects and campaigns.
  • Conduct regular audits of existing content to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Stay up-to-date with election news, voting rights developments, and civic technology trends.
  • Execute other tasks as assigned.

You are someone with:

  • 2+ years of experience in content writing, preferably in the nonprofit, civic, or technology sectors.
  • Experience collaborating cross-functionally and navigating the needs and priorities of a variety of stakeholders.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to transform complex information into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences.
  • Experience writing for multiple platforms (web, publications, social media, email).
  • Understanding of SEO principles and content strategy.
  • Strong research skills and commitment to factual accuracy.
  • Experience working within a style guide, such as Associated Press, Chicago, MLA, or APA.
  • Excellent time management and ability to juggle multiple projects with tight deadlines.
  • Passion for civic engagement and democracy.

It’s a plus if you have:

  • Experience writing about elections, voting processes, or civic engagement.
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility standards for content.
  • Familiarity with content management systems.
  • Experience writing for both B2C and B2B audiences.
  • Spanish language proficiency.
