Job description

We’re on a mission to help every family leave their legacy with a fast, easy, and secure way to create, manage, and distribute their estate plan online. Since 2017, we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of families plan for their future with a streamlined and intuitive approach that makes estate planning simple, affordable, and accessible. We’re backed by leading names in venture capital including Jackson Square Ventures, Link Ventures, Revolution’s Rise of the Rest, Halogen Ventures, and more.

As Assistant General Counsel, Product, you will lead legal strategy for the expansion of Trust & Will’s estate planning platform for professionals—including financial advisors, attorneys, and nonprofit advocates—who generate estate planning documents on behalf of their clients. Your deep expertise in estate planning law will guide the development and governance of a product experience that is compliant, modern, and scalable for use across a variety of institutional settings.

You’ll work closely with Product, Engineering, and Compliance teams to ensure professional users can confidently and lawfully serve their clients through our platform. Reporting to our Head of Legal, you’ll also collaborate regularly with both our Assistant General Counsel for Consumer Products and Legislative Advocacy and our Assistant General Counsel for Privacy and Product Development (non–estate planning) to maintain consistency, compliance, and innovation across the entire Trust & Will legal ecosystem.

About You

You are a seasoned estate planning attorney with a forward-thinking approach to legal technology. You've advised on or worked within platforms that generate estate planning documents, and you're energized by the opportunity to evolve how those services are delivered—especially through trusted professional intermediaries.

Your strength lies in translating estate planning law into scalable, compliant product frameworks that support both individual outcomes and broader institutional goals. You thrive in environments where you can apply legal depth to business and product strategy, especially in new or emerging spaces.

About The Role

Lead Legal Strategy for the Advisor-Focused Estate Planning Platform

  • Own legal guidance for Trust & Will’s professional-use platform, supporting financial advisors, attorneys, and nonprofit advocates
  • Ensure product functionality is aligned with estate planning laws in all U.S. jurisdictions, and designed for appropriate third-party facilitation
  • Shape platform features, workflows, and document generation logic through an estate planning lens
  • Define the appropriate scope and guardrails for professional users creating or facilitating legal documents on behalf of clients

Internal Product Partnership

  • Work directly with Product, Engineering, and Design to embed estate planning legal standards into product development
  • Provide scalable legal frameworks for the advisor experience, including jurisdictional variation and professional scope of use
  • Partner with Compliance to align professional-facing product features with regulatory expectations

Cross-Functional Legal Collaboration

  • Collaborate with our AGC for Consumer Products and Legislative Advocacy to align on shared estate planning frameworks, policy positions, and user guidance
  • Work closely with our AGC for Privacy and Product Development (non–estate planning) to ensure coordinated legal support across non-estate product initiatives, privacy compliance, and shared product infrastructure

External Engagement & Thought Leadership

  • Represent Trust & Will as a legal expert in estate planning product delivery, particularly through advisor and nonprofit channels
  • Monitor and assess regulatory changes that affect the professional facilitation of estate planning
  • Engage with industry associations, regulators, and stakeholders to support innovation and compliance in professional-use estate planning platforms

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing
  • 10+ years of experience practicing estate planning law, including deep expertise in wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and related legal instruments
  • Experience supporting or advising platforms used by professionals to generate estate planning documents at scale
  • Strong understanding of compliance and regulatory frameworks governing legal services delivered by or through third-party professionals
  • Excellent cross-functional communication and collaboration skills, especially with technical and product teams
  • Ability to translate complex legal concepts into scalable product features and guardrails

Bonus Points For

  • Experience at a legal tech company, SaaS platform, or startup supporting estate planning or advisor tools
  • Familiarity with estate planning delivery models offered through financial services, nonprofits, or employer benefits
  • Involvement in professional associations or policy efforts related to estate planning innovation
