About the Position


The Senior Director of Finance will lead core financial reporting and accounting activities for both the Internet Society and the Internet Society Foundation. This includes oversight of GAAP-compliant financial statements, treasury functions, monthly and quarterly closes, year-end audits, IRS filings (including Form 990), budgeting and forecasting, and financial analysis. This role also supports accounts payable, expense reporting, and payment processes across our global operations.


Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Director will provide international strategic support across financial reporting for staff, executive leadership, and the Board of Trustees, including its Finance and Audit Committees. They will collaborate with the Director of Financial Systems to optimize financial modeling and tools for organizational use.


This role will manage a team of two and is key in building a collaborative and values-driven Finance function.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee financial close processes and ensure alignment with GAAP standards.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts in financial operations through new processes and technologies.
  • Co-lead the administration and enhancement of financial systems, including ledger and cash modules.
  • Prepare timely, accurate financial analysis for executive and Board-level reporting.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders on budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Support year-end audits and external reporting with clarity and transparency.
  • Prepare and file IRS Form 990 and other required global regulatory filings.
  • Work closely with the People & Culture team to ensure effective global payroll and compensation practices.
  • Assist in managing corporate treasury activities and cash flow reporting.
  • Collaborate with program teams to ensure grant reporting compliance.
  • Serve as a key resource for accounting guidance across the organization.
  • Foster a global finance culture rooted in integrity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Participate in broader organization-wide initiatives as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • A degree in Accounting or Finance and extensive relevant international experience (12+ years preferred) with 5-7 years management experience.
  • CPA certification is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP principles and nonprofit financial reporting.
  • Proven experience leading finance operations and implementing new processes or systems.
  • A collaborative approach and experience managing or mentoring team members.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced, globally distributed work environment.
  • Comfort working across time zones and engaging with culturally diverse teams.

  • Some travel may be required.

Compensation and benefits for this position will be paid in local currency and based on the country and geographic location’s local salary and benefits market data for the position. Exact pay will be based on factors including but not limited to relevant qualifications, experience, geographic location, education, business and organizational needs.
