Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Manager, Nuclear Analysis as part of the broader Nuclear Fuels department and working collaboratively with multiple NuScale engineering teams, this position is an engineer experienced in fuel thermal-mechanical analyses, codes, and methods, fuel mechanical design, as well as familiar with core design, neutronics, and thermal-hydraulic analysis. This role will support development, licensing, and application of methods in areas including fuel performance, neutronics, and reload safety analysis. Practical knowledge of key discipline interfaces within Nuclear Fuels is critical.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Exercise in-depth knowledge of industry best-practices and state-of-the-art advancements to lead methodology development and conduct independent analysis and evaluations in areas of technical expertise to support development of a safe and economical design.
  2. Establish methods and perform safety analysis calculations using industry-standard fuel thermal-mechanical simulation tools such as FRAPCON, FRAPTRAN, FAST, or vendor equivalent industry codes; serve as technical authority for subject area and seek out areas for improvement, efficiency, and interface optimization.
  3. Develop methods and perform safety analysis calculations using industry-standard neutronics tools such as CASMO5/SIMULATE5.
  4. Contribute to technical development of licensing technical or topical reports, license applications, and other licensing documentation, and participate in licensing interactions including interface with the government regulator in areas of technical responsibility.
  5. Prepare and verify engineering reports, calculations, system descriptions and specifications, and other design documents with particular emphasis on fuel performance and neutronics. Work on tasks in multiple and diverse areas.
  6. Work collaboratively within the Nuclear Fuels organization to ensure design and analysis interfaces are adequately managed, including with core design, fuel design, subchannel thermal-hydraulics, and transient analysis.
  7. Communicate professionally in areas of technical responsibility across disciplines, at various levels of the organization, and with internal and external stakeholders including customers and regulatory bodies.
  8. Develop resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and innovation.
  9. Mentor and train other engineers or interns in sound approaches and standards for solving problems in technical areas of expertise.
  10. Plan, organize, and perform innovative engineering assignments on a team dedicated to the development of an engineering project; interpret scope and requirements of projects with an ability to execute.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • Education:   A minimum of B.S. degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university is required. An M.S. in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering is desirable.
  • Experience: A minimum of 8 years of full-time, directly relevant engineering experience is required. Demonstrated experience in implementing engineering design processes for thermal-hydraulics, transient analysis, and related safety analysis is required. Experience in core design and neutronics preferred.
  • Industry Requirements:  Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.

Pay and Benefits: 

The target pay range for this position is $127,104 - $153,401 annually.  The full pay range is $113,955 - $178,237.
