OVERVIEW:

We're looking for a Senior Front-End Design Engineer who brings a passion for systems thinking, scalable design, and modern front-end technologies. In this role, you’ll contribute significantly to defining the design language and front-end framework of the EMS platform by developing a centralized, reusable, and maintainable component library. This is more than just crafting UI—it's about architecting a component system that supports rapid development, ensures accessibility and regulatory compliance, and delivers a seamless user experience at scale.

Elections are the backbone of democracy, and technology is critical in ensuring they're fair, accessible, and resilient. The design system you help shape will directly impact thousands of election workers—and millions of voters—by making complex processes clear, consistent, and trustworthy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Partner with Design Team to build, maintain, and drive adoption of a reusable component library.
  • Ensure components are modular, flexible, and documented to support rapid assembly across multiple jurisdictions and feature sets.
  • Collaborate with UX/UI designers to bring prototypes to life, offering both technical feedback and creative input to improve user experiences.
  • Creating and maintaining core standards like responsive design, a11y, and i18n, and training our internal teams to become experts in layering these concepts to our applications.
  • Manage the upgrade and lifecycle of core components; define what gets centralized vs. forked for unique implementation needs.
  • Maintain comprehensive component documentation, usage guidelines, and contribution standards for designers and engineers.
  • Engage regularly with internal development teams to gather feedback and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Explore how Gen AI and AI-powered UX patterns (predictive forms, personalized UI, etc.) can enhance EMS workflows and voter engagement tools.
  • Ensure all components meet stringent standards for performance, usability, and inclusivity.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Five (5+) years of professional front-end engineering experience, ideally in design systems or enterprise-level component libraries.
  • Strong command of modern JavaScript frameworks & libraries, CSS architecture, accessibility best practices, and performance optimization.
  • Currently utilizing .NET Blazor and Telerik component libraries, so experience in those is a plus
  • Solid understanding of design tokens, Figma-to-code workflows, and front-end CI/CD pipelines.
  • Systems thinker with experience maintaining or contributing to scalable design systems.
  • Ability to synthesize product needs and user feedback into elegant component abstractions.
  • Understanding of coding for Section 508 & WCAG 2.0 compliance.
  • Proficiency in code versioning systems like Git is desirable.
  • Familiarity or passion for civic tech, elections, or government systems is a huge plus.
  • Bonus: Interest or experience integrating AI/ML or exploring emerging tech in UI/UX.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at a time.
  • May be required to work on-call or long hours if necessary, in case of serious network malfunction.
