ABOUT THE ROLE
Bionews is looking for a full-time science editor to join our growing Science team!

We are seeking individuals with a PhD in life sciences to assign and edit accurate and detailed news articles and informational pages about new research, drug development, and other topics related to chronic and rare diseases. The ideal candidate has experience in a professional capacity (preferably in digital media) editing health and medical content for a lay audience. 

 If you are interested in making a difference, consider joining our Science team, where our mission is to provide reliable and highly accurate content to chronic and rare disease communities who are typically underserved in terms of being able to access credible information that is relevant and easy for them to understand.

As a science editor for Bionews, you will be involved in reporting on anything from preclinical research to FDA approvals, explaining studies, research, and clinical trial results clearly, accurately, and thoroughly in terms that non-scientists can understand. You will work closely with our team of writers and fellow editors to ensure drafts are accurate, thorough, and well explained before publishing.

This is a full-time remote position. U.S. candidates are preferred, but highly qualified international applicants may be considered.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assign news articles and informational resource pages to science writers.
  • Edit and revise articles/pages, ensuring the content is clear, accurate, and engaging for a lay audience.
  • Collaborate with science writers and copy editors to ensure clarity and accuracy ofcontent, meeting Bionews standards and ensuring it aligns with our editorial strategy and audience.
  • Work with our news researcher to find new material to cover.
  • Stay up to date on emerging disease topics, trends, and major research and drug developments 
  • Manage your own editorial projects and daily tasks, ensuring a proper editorial workflow for science content.
  • Be highly involved in the training and mentoring of science writers.
  • Plan and execute the coverage of scientific/medical conferences, interviews, and special projects (including SEO content).
  • Make outreach to external entities, including advocacy organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and experts, to develop stories. 
  • Learn and follow internal workflow processes.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD in a life science discipline (cell biology, neurology, molecular biology, microbiology, biomedical sciences, immunology, etc.)
  • Experience in health/medical editing for a lay audience
  • Proficient in conducting independent research to ensure factual accuracy
  • Editorial leadership or management experience a plus
  • Familiarity with SEO best practices
  • Native or near native fluency in American English (written and oral)
