Main Purpose of the Role
The Senior Director, Medical Education and Professional Affairs is responsible for overseeing all aspects of medical education for North America within Bioventus, including developing and managing KOL relationships, key societal relationships, and creating and executing the short and long-term medical education strategy for all pillars of the business in conjunction with upstream marketing and market access/corporate accounts. This position collaborates with the Sr. Director Medical Education and Professional Affairs for EMEA and APAC to ensure consistent professional education is delivered in line with our growth strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Leads the development and implementation of a unified and cohesive strategic vision for medical education and professional affairs.
  • Leads the development and management of Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and key societal relationships.  Proactively monitors the landscape to identify emerging influencers and their relationships with specific technologies and potential competitors and key peer to peer research.
  • Curriculum Development & Management: Collaborates with the Sr. Director Medical Education, EMEA and APAC to ensure the medical education curriculum is current, relevant, impactful, and meets all required standards.
  • Closely collaborates with Downstream Marketing teams to ensure product value propositions and related health economics are clearly incorporated into the content/curriculum development with KOLs.
  • Partners closely with Upstream Marketing teams to ensure KOL/VOC and market trends are integrated into the development of future products and clinical evidence development in support of future and unmet business needs.
  • Oversees the development and implementations of continuing medical education (CME) and other professional development program opportunities.
  • Partners with Regulatory Affairs, Clinical, and Market Access teams to provide guidance and opinion for medical education strategies and submissions.
  • Works in alignment with the core Business Strategy, including ensuring strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), HCPs, and internal stakeholders to implement high-quality peer-to-peer educational programs.
  • Leads strategic partnerships with relevant professional societies and groups.
  • Develops and executes plans to disseminate medical and scientific information, including clinical research results related to products and the diseases they address through medical educational programs, and medical conferences.
  • Develops and maintains meaningful, sustainable relationships with notable physicians and external stakeholders throughout all Medical Education projects.
  • Collects and report insights gleaned in the field from KOL interactions to inform strategies, development, and lifecycle opportunities.
  • Engages in conventions, symposiums, advisory board programs, and congresses.
  • Oversees relevant medical communications and publication dissemination planning (e.g. abstracts, case studies/series, review articles, etc.)
  • Budget Management: Managing the budget for all areas of medical education.
  • Holds oneself and others accountable to conduct business in a manner compliant with Bioventus’ Code of Compliance and Ethics, policies and procedures and internal controls applicable to their role.
  • All other duties and projects as assigned.
Education and Experience (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area required; Master’s degree or Ph.D. preferred
  •  15+ years in medical affairs, clinical development, or related fields within diagnostics, medical devices, or pharmaceuticals.
  • Commercial strategic approach and clinical acumen required; with a dynamic, collaborative and cross-functional “Med Ed in the Field,” mindset.
  • Proven ability to build out a comprehensive medical education business unit.
  • Excellent planning, organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Including the ability to speak and present publicly.
  • Self-directed with the ability to rapidly integrate the organization’s culture.
  • Skills in scientific literature evaluation and preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations are essential.
  • Team player, collaborator, flexible and highly adaptive to change.
