Our oncology physicians and the Baystate Health system rely on the high-quality cancer registry data to promote the best patient outcomes and growth within our Cancer Program and Health System. Massachusetts is a SEER state; therefore, the Cancer Registry department follow the SEER Program Manual and Staging Manual.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

The D’Amour Center for Cancer Care provides integrated cancer care for adult and pediatric patients. The care team includes physicians and clinical staff, cancer survivors, community cancer support activists and community members, who put their hearts and souls into designing and delivering the opti­mal patient experience. Baystate is the only comprehensive cancer program – including leukemia, pediatric cancer, and gynecologic cancer care – and the only clinical research program in western Massachusetts.

SCHEDULE:

  • Remote – Full Time – 40 hours – Flexible Hours

Current States eligible for remote: CT, FL, MD, NH, NC, OH, RI, TN, TX, VT, VA, MA

Responsibilities

  • Maintains reporting to the Massachusetts State Cancer Registry according to
  • SOPs. Massachusetts is a SEER state.
  • Maintains appropriate procedures to be in compliance with the American College of Surgeons standards.
  • Ability to identify reportable diagnosis as defined by the SEER Program Coding and Staging Manual.
  • Ability to apply the SEER Program Coding and Staging Manual guidelines to case abstracting.
  • Ability to abstract high-quality, complex cancer cases in a timely manner and as set forth by the State of Massachusetts.
  • Ability to seek clarification of complex abstracting principles through SEER Sync, CAForum (as needed) and remain current in cancer registry educational activities.
  • Reporting SEER data to the State of Massachusetts
  • Ability to perform other tasks such as death clearance and autopsy report review for case ascertainment and abstraction, and other registry tasks as assigned

Skills & Compentecies

  • Ability to analyze medical documents (including hospital records and computerized reports) to classify and code cancer data.
  • Ability to abstract complex cancer sites. Address queries in a timely fashon
  • Ability to work with various computer systems including Windows applications and networked systems for data collection, and report production.
  • Must have good attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s Degree and 3 or more years of related experience in cancer data case finding and abstraction
  • Formal Education completed in Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology & Pharmacology required.
  • Exceptional skills with navigating hospital EMR systems and Cancer Registry Databases. Knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Excel and Word.

Certifications

  • ODS-C required thru National Cancer Registrars Association ( NCRA)
