The starting base salary range for an Group Underwriter IV is $67,000 to $94,000. Actual salaries will vary by geographic location and are based on factors such as candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, competencies, and company tenure & equity. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company performance and individual performance.

Group Underwriter IV Overview

Conducts risk assessment and selection for small, mid, and large case market on Life and Disability, Dental and Worksite products. Produces rates for new groups using company proposal system.  Prepares formal proposals and renewals using word processing, spreadsheet tools and software as applicable. Completes financial exhibits using established guidelines. Assists in the preparation of RFP response. Verifies rates on sold cases. Assist in training lower-level underwriters and sales staff.  Works on special product or rating projects as required. Uses knowledge of formulas to determine when deviation is necessary and recommendations alternatives.

Essential Duties

  • Assesses risk and produces rates for new groups with advanced levels of autonomy
  • Completes annual renewals for all products and performs related maintenance tasks
  • Services current group clients including benefit changes, reporting, and response to telephone and email inquiries
  • Verifies sold case data including final rating
  • Provides training and mentoring to underwriting and sales staff
  • Performs projects and/or SME assignments
  • May perform other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of group insurance, dental and worksite products
  • Advanced understanding of underwriting principles and rating methodology
  • Demonstrated capability to apply experience rating formulas for all products
  • Advanced MS Office skills
  • Strong math and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to establish priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree - related experience can substitute
  • 5 years of underwriting experience

Preferred Education and Experience

  • LOMA, HIAA
