About this Position

The Life Insurance Underwriter 1 is an entry-level position in the Underwriting department. The Underwriter receives intensive training up to 24 months to develop knowledge, skills, and abilities that are required to underwrite life insurance applications in accordance with guidelines and procedures. Once training is complete, the role will require reviewing documents such as applications, prescription drug profiles, laboratory reports, underwriting interviews and medical records to determine the level of risk presented and to make a final decision regarding eligibility for coverage.

This is a remote position after on-site training is completed.

The estimated salary range for this role is: 55K

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Participate in all departmental training to include anatomy/physiology, underwriting philosophy, medical impairments and underwriting requirements
  • Complete the Medical Terminology course.  Review, interpret and analyze medical records 
  • During training will review underwriting requirements with trainer and then work independently until given approval authority 
  • Take on an assigned caseload once released from training
  • Review and document underwriting requirements to include alerts, prescription drug profiles, underwriting interviews, memo replies, criminal reports, motor vehicle reports, etc.,
  • Analyze and assess individual applications, age and amount requirements and all underwriting evidence to determine insurability. 
  • Accept or deny risk and apply additional mortality tables as needed. Take final action.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Biology, Psychology, or similar OR relevant work experience is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and medical impairment is a plus
  • Working knowledge of the underwriting function
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills    
  • Excellent PC and organizational skills
  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and under pressure
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
