JOB SUMMARY
The Professional Coding Supervisor is responsible for managing the everyday operations of their respective area(s). This includes the supervision of Coding & Compliance Specialists and Professional Billing Specialists. The Coding Supervisor acts as a liaison between the Credentialing Department, Patient Access Department(s), Chargemasters, and Combined Business Office. The individual is responsible, along with the Manager or Director, for completion of employee evaluations, disciplinary action, interviewing, hiring, and termination. Will act as primary contact for new provider onboarding and education. Will perform internal coding accuracy audits and provide feedback to coding & compliance specialists. Will partner with leadership and external compliance agencies to ensure desired targets are achieved. Will act as a member on a project team when their coding expertise is requested. The Professional Coding Supervisor will be required to spend 20-40% of their working time directly applying codes to maintain and enhance their skills. Will act as the subject matter expert on complex coding cases, denials, and appeals for all staff and providers.JOB DETAILS AND REQUIREMENTS
Type: Full Time (80 hours per 2 week pay period, with benefits)
Typical hours for this position: Monday-Friday, days, may work an occasional weekend

Education:
- High school graduate or equivalent- required
- Bachelor’s degree in business, but will accept comparable experience in lieu of degree- preferred
Certification & Licensures:
- At least 1 base certification and 1 specialty coding certification- required.
Accepted certifications include:
AAPC - CPC (Certified Professional Coder- Apprentice); CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder); COC (Certified Outpatient Coder); CRC (Certified Risk Adjustment Coder); CPC-P (Certified Professional Coder - Payer); any of the 23+ specialty coding certifications offered by AAPC
AHIMA - CCA (Certified Coding Associate); CCS (Certified Coding Specialist); CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist - Physician-Based)
(Based on type of coding, the hiring manager may have a preference for a specific certifying organization or a specific coding certification to be discussed at time of interview.)
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree plus minimum 3 year of direct certified experience applying codes OR high school diploma (or equivalent) plus 7 years of direct certified experience applying codes- required
- Must be able to proficiently code at least 3 complex services as defined by leadership. Proficiency is based on the ability to independently code all services performed in the service at accepted levels of accuracy. This position is expected to work with a high level of autonomy, often communicating directly with providers and clinical managers on documentation and compliance concerns- required
- Strong communication skills and confidence in subject matter expertise- required
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD, and HCPCS coding and reimbursement required. Medical coding experience in a physician practice, inpatient setting, or outpatient setting strongly preferred. Must possess strong organizational and excellent customer service skills, the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
