As an Engineering Manager on our Data Security team, you’ll lead a group of talented Software Developers and Security Engineers working on some of the most complex, high-impact challenges in applied cryptography. Your team is at the heart of building the secure foundations that power every 1Password product — from designing new cryptographic systems to preparing for a post-quantum future.
You’ll collaborate closely with Product and Security Engineering to shape a multi-year security roadmap, bring emerging technologies to market, and ensure that security at 1Password scales with our growth. You’ll also play a key role in hiring, mentoring, and growing a team of deeply technical subject matter experts.

What we're looking for:A strong background in data security, ideally in applied cryptography. This could include experience such as:Implementing modern symmetric or asymmetric cryptographic algorithmsBuilding or integrating digital signature schemes and hash functionsDelivering key management systems, key distribution protocols, or working with hardware security modulesIdentifying and mitigating real-world security vulnerabilities and attack vectors
You’ve managed or technically led a team of developers and owned application development from planning to delivery.You bring hands-on engineering experience and have tackled complex, ambiguous problems through code.You use your technical background to coach developers and elevate team performance.You’ve led cross-functional projects that span multiple systems, teams, or architectural layers.You create a positive, inclusive team environment where people feel supported, challenged, and energized.You make thoughtful decisions — even with limited information — and guide your team through tough trade-offs.You’re not afraid to get into the technical weeds when needed to unblock or accelerate progress.You drive delivery and long-term planning, shaping roadmaps that balance execution with strategic goals.You communicate clearly across disciplines, balancing security best practices with business needs.Bonus points for:Experience with post-quantum cryptography (e.g., lattice-based algorithms) in theory or practiceFamiliarity with evolving cryptographic standards and bodies (e.g., NIST), and how they shape implementation decisionsWhat you can expect:Lead and develop a high-performing team of engineers in a culture of innovation, execution, and collaboration.Scope, prioritize, and plan impactful security initiatives in partnership with your team.Drive high-quality execution through iterative delivery, velocity, and clear communication.Provide hands-on technical leadership within your team and across engineering.Build and support a diverse, inclusive team where people grow and thrive.Help scale a specialized team by refining hiring, onboarding, and growth practices in partnership with fellow EMs.

Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $172,000 CAD and $232,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
At 1Password, we approach each individual's compensation with a promise of fair market value and internal equity commensurate with experience and specific skill set.
We believe in the power of remote work, but we also recognize that in-person connection is sometimes important to help us achieve our mission. While we are a remote-first company, occasional travel for in-person engagement will be a part of this role. Frequency will depend on role and responsibilities, and may include, but is not limited to, annual department-wide offsites, team meetings, and customer/industry events. These events will typically be held in varying locations across Canada and the US.
