Job description

As a product-driven company founded by engineers, we know the value of a great engineering culture, and we’re looking for an experienced DevOps Team Lead to join a team built from the ground up on trust, teamwork and tight feedback loops.

As a DevOps Team Lead, you’ll lead our DevOps team, working collaboratively using a pragmatically-chosen modern tech stack (Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, .NET) to help Gearset run a scalable, secure and reliable service, and enable development of the solution to scale with the rapid growth of the company.

We live by our core values, which aren’t just nice words - they guide us through day-to-day challenges and are the foundation of how we work together. Our pragmatic approach has allowed us to maintain the ability to release updates to our application multiple times a day, even as we add new features to the product and expand our global footprint.

What’s the opportunity for a DevOps Team Lead at Gearset?
  • Lead and shape the direction of DevOps at Gearset, influencing infrastructure decisions and best practices at a rapidly scaling company and maintaining our ability to release our service multiple times a day
  • Develop and mentor a high-performing DevOps team, fostering a culture of continuous learning, feedback and professional growth
  • Work in a pragmatic, high-impact environment where we prioritise solving problems over rigid processes, making iterative improvements and shipping meaningful changes quickly
  • Tackle complex scaling challenges in a globally distributed, multi-tenant SaaS environment built on Kubernetes and AWS
  • Collaborate across the company to drive operational excellence, building a deep understanding of how Gearset works and using that to support engineers, designers, marketers and sales teams in delivering value to our customers

  • What you’ll achieve
  • Drive the velocity of the team through our core values, prioritising impactful work, breaking it down into small slices and helping the team deliver valuable improvements week on week
  • Support the team’s autonomy through clear and open communication, fostering an environment where team members have the freedom to make decisions, take ownership of their work and solve problems independently while still aligning with organisational goals
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks related to security, scalability and operational efficiency before they impact users
  • Ensure smooth cross-functional collaboration, making DevOps a key enabler of growth across the company
  • Work alongside the team to operate and evolve our infrastructure and development practices, bringing your experience and rigour to bear in maintaining our high standards

  • About you
  • Have been in a DevOps Team Lead, or equivalent position, for a couple of years or more with a proven track record of driving focus, alignment and execution in a fast-moving environment
  • A strong ability to understand the needs of users, work with them to map out additional requirements around security, compliance and scalability and prioritise technical work that will efficiently address those needs
  • Have in-depth practical experience working with AWS and Kubernetes (in particular, VPC networking and security, IAM, EC2, Postgres RDS, S3, SQS, SNS, ECR and EKS)
  • Have hands-on experience running production-level SaaS applications at scale, performing change management without disruption to users and responding to incidents that impact the availability of the service for users

  • Great to haves
  • Hands-on experience automating the management of infrastructure using Terraform
  • Strong knowledge of CI/CD pipeline configuration and operation
  • Familiarity with .NET/C# applications and development environments
  • Experience implementing observability solutions and using them to gain insights into application and infrastructure performance

  • Benefits and perks (the stuff you’d expect!)
  • This is a remote UK based full time opportunity, working Monday to Friday
  • Generous personal development budget for courses, conferences, or whatever is useful to your professional development in the role of up to £1500 per year
  • Top end hardware provided
  • Opportunity to join our Long Term Incentive scheme
  • Free lunch in the office
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (with the option to buy an extra 5 each year)
  • Company Pension Plan (matching up to 5%)
