Position Summary:

Reporting to the Country Director, Chile, the Conservation Manager – Strategic Alliances will support the implementation of strategic partnerships to protect and restore critical habitats for birds and biodiversity. This role involves advancing the National Plan for the Conservation of Birds (ENCA), collaborating with stakeholders, and securing funding opportunities. The manager will also guide the Conserva Aves initiative, develop community guidelines, and support local advocacy efforts aligned with Audubon priorities.

Remote in Chile.

Additional Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate and support Audubon’s engagement for the implementation of Audubon’s strategic initiatives and targets in Chile, such as the ENCA 2021-2030 strategic lines of action.

  • Coordinate the ENCA Implementation Committee and its Steering Council, oversee Working Groups

  • Present the ENCA 2021-2030 (international, national, regional and local) to external audiences, adapting the presentation to fit the needs and communication level of the audience.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and partners in the public, private and civil society sectors to help position the ENCA as the framework for bird conservation in Chile in the long term.

  • Establish and maintain a system for identifying opportunities for the ENCA 2021-2030 funding, including calls for proposals, sponsorship opportunities, among others, and build a portfolio of potential projects.

  • Create reports on the management, coordination, and implementation of the ENCA 2021-2030.

  • Support Audubon Americas Director of Protected Areas in implementing Conserva Aves in Chile, which includes advising the development of playbooks for the establishment and management of protected areas, community engagement, and sustainable development practices.

  • Collaborate with local communities, international NGOs, and funding partners to establish and strengthen protection for coastal landscapes and seascapes.

  • Develop nature-sensitive livelihood opportunities for people living in and adjacent to protected areas.

  • Ensure that conservation efforts contribute to national commitments under biodiversity and climate conventions.

  • Oversee project deliverables to ensure objectives are achieved. 

  • Oversee contract work by independent contractors and when needed, manage intern staff through establishment of work objectives and priorities, reviewing and revising these objectives on an ongoing basis to guide and mentor team members in their work progress.

  • Write proposals and other technical and administrative documents, such as Terms of Reference, white papers, and others as required.

  • Support other activities, as appropriate, for the development of Audubon’s mission in Chile, including, but not limited, support in the design of proposals for bird conservation and management of institutional relationships.

  • Act as liaison between the Implementation Committee, the Steering Council, the Working Groups, and the Ministry of the Environment.

  • Align the objectives and projects of different organizations to achieve the ENCA action lines.

  • Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas including through joint planning and execution of shared priorities.

  • Maintain and fosters culture of safety.

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, policy, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Five years of related experience developing and implementing strategic plans, conservation projects and organizational initiatives. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

  • Commitment to Audubon’s organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation.

  • Ornithological knowledge is a plus.

  • Strong problem-solving skills; excellent judgment and decision-making skills, possessing a high degree of integrity in all deliverables.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus.

  • Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, proactively, with minimal supervision and to maintain accountability for work products.

  • Demonstrated experience working with external partners from diverse sectors such as the public, NGO and civil society.

  • Ability to perform under pressure and, sometimes, with short deadlines.

  • Ability to integrate strategic thinking in the design of proposals and building alliances for the implementation of projects and public policies.

  • Professional with high work and moral integrity and ethics.

  • Spanish and English languages fluency required.

  • Advance use of Microsoft Office – use of other software as Miradi and Miradi Share is a plus.

  • Interest in conservation and passion for the mission of the National Audubon Society a must.

  • Any travel needed? Availability to travel frequently to Santiago, our pilot sites, and internationally, as required.
