Position Overview
Nas.io is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to support and scale our backend systems for a fast-growing creator platform. This is a full-time remote role open to candidates in European time zones, with an expectation to cover critical off-peak hours (approximately 20:00–09:00 GMT+8) when our Asia-based team members are offline. The ideal candidate thrives in an asynchronous work environment, can work independently, and is passionate about improving product reliability, system architecture, and performance. You will play a key role in ensuring our platform remains robust and responsive around the clock. (Compensation for this role is approximately USD $3,000 per month.)
Team Setup & Reporting: The Senior Backend Engineer will report directly to the Head of Engineering. Team collaboration at Nas.io is primarily asynchronous due to the distributed nature of our workforce. There will be a minimal required overlap with the Singapore/India engineering teams (during their morning hours) to facilitate knowledge transfer and hand-offs. Clear written communication and proactive status updates are essential in this setup, as the engineer will often operate autonomously during EU daytime (when APAC teams are offline).
Key Responsibilities
  • Backend Feature Development: Collaborate with product managers to design and implement new backend features that align with business goals and user needs. Ensure features are delivered from concept to deployment with high quality.
  • System Architecture & Performance: Continuously improve the architecture of our core systems for better performance, scalability, and maintainability. Participate in technical design discussions and make decisions to enhance system reliability.
  • Infrastructure & DevOps: Enhance and maintain our infrastructure (AWS cloud services and related tooling). Set up and refine CI/CD pipelines as needed to streamline deployments.
  • Monitoring & Alerts: Establish and fine-tune comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting across all platforms. Maintain observability tools to ensure any issues are detected early and accurately, enabling rapid response.
  • Off-Hours Support: Serve as the point person for troubleshooting and responding to backend system issues during off-peak hours (EU daytime / APAC night). Promptly address incidents, mitigate impact, and escalate to the broader engineering team if critical issues arise outside your expertise.
  • Quality & Best Practices: Uphold high code quality standards through code reviews, testing, and documentation. Introduce best practices for coding, error handling, and performance optimization across the backend team.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience: 4+ years in backend development or systems engineering roles, with a strong track record of building and maintaining scalable systems.
  • Backend Proficiency: Hands-on experience in one or more backend programming languages and frameworks (Node.js, Python) for building APIs and services.
  • Databases & Caching: Solid experience working with databases (especially MongoDB or other NoSQL/SQL databases) and caching systems like Redis to build efficient data-driven applications.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, including services such as EC2, S3, Lambda, etc. Ability to manage and optimize cloud resources for cost and performance.
  • Observability: Experience with observability and monitoring tools (for example, setting up dashboards, logs, and alerts using services like CloudWatch, Datadog, or Grafana/Prometheus) to ensure system health and performance.
  • Autonomous Work: Proven ability to work autonomously and take initiative in a remote, asynchronous environment. You should be comfortable making progress with limited supervision and adept at communicating progress or issues in writing.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities, especially under time pressure when responding to incidents. Capable of systematically diagnosing issues across a complex system (from application to database to infrastructure).
  • Bonus Points: Prior experience at a startup or in a fast-paced tech company. Such background demonstrates adaptability and the ability to handle broad responsibilities beyond a narrow role definition.
Special Inquiries for the Hiring Process
The hiring process I have in mind:
  • At least 1 technical interview with someone in the team (1.5 hours).
    • We may have more if we think the result for the first interview is not an obvious yes.
    • The interview will be around asking about past experience, fundamental coding skills, fundamental computer science backgrounds, and system design skills (related to SRE stuffs).
  • Interview with the head of engineering.
  • Interview with the CEO (if needed).
Specific details or unique aspects related to the position
  • Asynchronous Collaboration: You’ll be working mostly during hours when the Asia-based team is offline. Expect most communication to happen via Slack, Jira, or other async tools. You should be comfortable making decisions and moving projects forward without immediate responses from colleagues. Documentation and clarity in writing are your allies in this environment.
  • High Independence & Initiative: This role requires a self-starter mentality. With limited real-time oversight, the Senior Backend Engineer is entrusted to identify what needs improvement or fixing and take action. You should have the confidence to propose changes to architecture or processes when you see a better path, and the discipline to manage your own workload effectively.
  • Critical Off-Hours Coverage: A key purpose of this position is to provide engineering coverage during the so-called "dead hours" (roughly 8 PM to 9 AM GMT+8). During these hours, you are the first responder for any urgent backend issues. This responsibility is crucial for maintaining 24/7 uptime and seamless user experience on the Nas.io platform. It’s a unique opportunity to have a significant impact, as you will be the go-to person ensuring stability while others are offline.
