Job description

The product management team at Posit are responsible for the Posit commercial products (Workbench, Connect, Package Manager and Connect Cloud) as well as integration with our strategic cloud partners, such as Databricks, Snowflake, AWS, Azure and GCP.

As a team we are responsible for the product vision and roadmap, specifically describing the rationale for product investment (what and why) and working closely with the development teams who build the product.

We also work very closely with the go-to-market teams, including product marketing, sales, customer success to ensure our customers are successful in their implementation of Posit products.

In this role you will work closely with the senior product managers on clearly scoped projects, where you will be responsible for product analysis and reporting, assist with product execution on the roadmap, and learn how to refine the product vision and strategy.

You will own aspects of roadmap execution for specific Posit product features, including:
  • Gathering and digestion of customer feedback.
  • Authoring of product requirements documents outlining the WHAT and the WHY as well as appropriate scope.
  • Attending sprint planning and reviews for refinement of a product feature through the software development lifecycle.
  • Ensuring product documentation is correct and up to date, working with both the documentation and engineering teams
  • Internal briefings and training (sales enablement) working with Product Marketing Management and Sales Operations
In addition, you will be responsible for various product analyses and reporting, for example:
  • Writing R or python scripts to query existing data (including feedback, call notes and closed/lost report) and make this available as reports or dashboard
  • Speaking to internal voice of the customer (customer success, solutions engineering and support teams) to gather information about pain points and feedback for items on the roadmap
  • Doing direct customer research by conducting structured customer interviews, typically with the data scientist or the system administrator
  • Gathering market and competitive information on ideas and features in development
  • Creating compelling demos of features that are imminent
  • Writing technical blog posts for new feature releases
You will assist the senior product managers with:
  • Refining and triaging the backlog, through awareness of github issues (public as well as private repos)
  • Refining product positioning, based on availability of product improvements and better knowledge of customer jobs-to-be-done
You will teach:
  • You are familiar with data science tools and able to use Python or R to create dashboards and reports
  • You have some proficiency in Linux and are able to install and manage server software.  You are able to have conversations about security and scalability of enterprise software
What you will learn:

  • Refining the product vision, by matching product capabilities that match with jobs-to-be-done
  • Prioritizing new product opportunities, ideas and features, based on the combination of customer knowledge and Posit strategic needs
  • Communicating this vision effectively to an internal audience (engineering, product marketing, sales enablement, etc.)
  • Communicate this vision effectively externally, via blogs, analyst relations, conference talks, workshops, etc.
Within 1 month, you’ll…
  • Meet the product management, product marketing, and engineering teams
  • Create or update a Quarto report that reads data from the warehouse and publish this to our private Posit Connect instance
  • Be able to navigate and query the product management system for feedback and idea tracking
  • Start working on either Posit Workbench or Posit Connect:
    • Become familiar with the software development lifecycle of the product you're working on, including shadowing a senior PM through release process activities.
    • Participate in the ongoing product management activities, such as customer triage, engineering feedback sessions and release process activities.
  • Create a personal on-boarding plan
Within 3 months, you’ll…
  • Have developed a good understanding of the end-to-end authoring and deployment workflow from Workbench to Connect, and can give a product demo of both products
  • Have completed your first project on either Workbench or Connect, working closely with the senior PM
  • Become responsible for the development of an active project workstream, including researching the what and why to write a Product Requirements document
  • Contributed to the research and preparation for a future high-priority project or opportunity not yet in development.
  • Have contributed to the Posit blog on an existing feature or feature area.
  • Have met with customers and partners to discuss your product
Within 6 months, you’ll…
  • Have completed a review of a defined subsection product documentation, and have contributed a fix, interacting closely with the documentation team
  • Have met with many members of the GTM team (Solutions Engineering, Customer Success, Sales, and Support)
  • Continue to take responsibility for the support of product engineering projects as well as running point on the research required to prepare for future projects
  • Be comfortable gathering feedback from end users and customers as well as presenting the product roadmap to customers.
  • Regularly synthesize and communicate customer research findings to the larger product management group and engineering
Within 12 months, you’ll…
  • Join an on-site team workweek as well as company work week
    • (Posit is a remote only organisation, and we celebrate meeting in person about twice per year, but we accommodate remote attendance where possible.)
  • Attend Posit Conf and actively participate in workshops, talks and customer conversations (we accommodate remote attendance)
  • Develop an understanding of Posit current customer base by meeting with accounts across the spectrum of our tiles and verticals
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the 18-mo product roadmap
  • Present on portions of the 18-mo product roadmap to stakeholders and engineering
  • Be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of numerous product enhancements
  • Develop strong working relationships with engineering, design, product marketing, support, solutions engineering, and other product managers
  • Complete your personal on-boarding plan
