Job description

This is a remote position.

Join a dynamic learning innovation and development team as an Remote   Academic Instructional Designer  and play a key role in shaping engaging and effective learning experiences in online higher education. You will contribute to best practices, manage curriculum projects, and collaborate with faculty to design, review, and implement innovative learning solutions. This can be a permanent position or a fixed term contract, depending on the candidate's preference.

The ideal candidate will be skilled in creating engaging and effective learning experiences, integrating innovative instructional strategies, and leveraging technology to enhance online and blended learning environments. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple curriculum review and development projects, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Collaborate with faculty and the academic operations team to design and enhance programmes, qualifications, and support courses.
  • Apply instructional design best practices to create engaging and immersive online learning experiences, integrating educational technologies and multimedia.
  • Review course materials to identify learning needs and ensure alignment with learning outcomes and accessibility standards, implementing feedback and improvements.
  • Work closely with subject matter experts to create cohesive and meaningful learning materials on the LMS and other tools.
  • Ensure instructional elements adhere to design guidelines and that writing style is suitable for learners and the NQF level.
  • Co-facilitate workshops and training sessions for faculty on effective learning and instructional design.
  • Co-create, review, and revise resources and documentation related to learning and teaching approaches.
  • Consult faculty on best practices in learning and instructional design, pedagogy, and assessment strategies, implementing improvements directly.
  • Review and edit educational materials (module outlines, study guides, online content) for clarity, accuracy, grammar, punctuation, and spelling, ensuring consistent style and tone.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks to ensure educational content complies with industry standards, accessibility guidelines, and copyright requirements.
  • Stay updated on trends in educational publishing to continuously improve educational content.
  • Check and correct citations and references according to our Reference Guide.
  • Format manuscripts and assessments according to the Style Guide, using pre-established Word styles.
  • Be flexible and adapt easily to changing requirements and needs, performing any duties as assigned by leadership within the Learning Innovation and Development team's scope.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A strong understanding of instructional and learning design principles in higher education.
  • Excellent educational writing, editing, and layout skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with various stakeholders. 
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and educational technologies.
  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to quality assurance.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing needs.


Requirements
Education, Skills & Experience Requirements 
  • A postgraduate qualification in Commerce, Law or Financial Services, Instructional design, Education, or a relevant field.
  • Previous working experience in higher education, business or instructional design for at least 5 years
  • An understanding of the process of learning design and experience negotiating the challenges of those processes
  • An understanding of learning design methods, learning theories and practice and demonstrable experience of applying these concepts
  • Ability to engage with stakeholders and scope learning requirements
  • Excellent skills relating to writing, editing and layout in a variety of contexts
  • Be able to work outside an office: A reliable home internet connection. A suitable working environment
  • Teaching experience in a higher education institution will be advantageous
  • Curriculum development experience across a range of NQF levels
  • Knowledge of the Higher and Further Education quality frameworks in South Africa

Benefits

Salary:

R37 000 - R92 750 dependent on experience
