Job Summary

As a QA Manager in a 401(k) company, your primary responsibility will be to ensure the quality, accuracy, and compliance of all processes related to retirement plan management. This includes overseeing the testing and validation of software systems, processes, and the overall workflow to minimize errors, ensure legal compliance, and maintain a smooth user experience for employees and plan administrators.


Job Responsibilities

  • Lead the QA Team: Build and manage organizational QA team(s) focused on ensuring accuracy, integrity, and compliance of 401(k) services, systems, and operations.
  • Process Automation and Optimization: Implement tools and strategies to automate manual processes, making the system more efficient and error-free (as discussed previously).
  • Test and Validate 401(k) Platforms/Software: Ensure that any software or platform used for managing 401(k) plans (e.g., payroll systems, employee enrollment portals) is thoroughly tested.
  • Compliance Assurance: Ensure that the company adheres to all federal, state, and industry regulations (ERISA, IRS, Department of Labor, etc.) during all testing and development activities.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Maintain and track detailed records of test results, including identified defects and fixes.
  • User Acceptance Testing (UAT): Lead UAT efforts to confirm that the 401(k) platform meets business requirements and end-user needs.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with Operation, finance, and software development teams to ensure a seamless integration of the 401(k) system and maintain continuous quality improvement.

Experience in QA Management:

  • Previous experience as a QA Manager or in quality assurance in financial services, preferably related to 401(k) or retirement plan management.
  • Familiarity with QA methodologies such as Agile and Hybrid.

Knowledge of 401(k) Plans:

  • Deep understanding of 401(k) plan administration, including eligibility criteria, contribution limits, vesting schedules, compliance testing, and reporting requirements.
  • Familiarity with tax implications and government regulations regarding retirement plans.

Testing Experience:

  • Proficiency in using QA more recent cutting edge testing tools.
  • Creating Comprehensive test suite, including test cases and scenarios.
  • Generating synthetic data.
  • Knowledge of automation testing, including scripting and test case development for financial applications. 

Data Management and Security:

  • Ensure that all data related to employee accounts, contributions, and plan management is secure and adheres to privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA for healthcare-related plans).

Communication Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact with internal stakeholders (management, developers, etc.) and external partners (e.g., vendors, auditors).

Familiarity with Financial Tools/Software:

  • Experience with retirement plan software platforms (e.g., Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, Empower), HRIS systems, or payroll software is an asset.

Regulatory Knowledge:

  • Understanding and staying up to date with ERISA, DOL (Department of Labor) regulations, and IRS guidelines for 401(k) plans.
Requirements
  • Automating Compliance Checks: Integrate automated tools to regularly check for compliance violations or discrepancies in employee 401(k) accounts.
  • Performance Testing: Ensure that systems can handle large volumes of data, particularly during peak periods such as year-end processing or contribution deadlines.
  • Test for Scalability: As the company grows, ensure the systems can scale to manage more accounts, contributions, and participants without performance issues.
  • Automation Testing Tools: Selenium, QTest, TestComplete.
  • Project Management Tools: Jira, Asana, Trello for task management and tracking bugs/issues.
  • Compliance Monitoring Tools: Tools that help with financial regulations, such as Fiduciary, T. Rowe Price, or Fidelity’s 401(k) admin platforms, might offer built-in compliance checks.
  • Reporting Tools: Tableau, Power BI, or built-in reporting tools for real-time dashboards on plan health, contribution trends, and compliance.



Remote Work Information

Compensation Information

The average salary for this position is expected to be between $90,000 and $140,000/year however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We do not anticipate candidates to be paid at the top of the range however, from time to time, it may occur on a case-by-case basis.
