Director, Business Development

 

Reports to: VP Business Development

 

SUMMARY

As a Business Development Director , this individual will be tasked with the sourcing and execution of General Practice Animal Hospital acquisitions with a goal of closing on 6+ deals per year.

 

The Director of Business Development – is responsible for identifying and pursuing acquisition opportunities within the veterinary industry. This role involves cultivating relationships with potential sellers, industry professionals, and key stakeholders, driving local marketing efforts, and participating in trade events. The Director will source and qualify acquisition targets, present them to the CVP Deal Committee, and guide prospects through the entire M&A process, ensuring a seamless transition. This individual will work closely with cross-functional teams to close deals, stay ahead of market trends, and provide regular updates on progress and opportunities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Identify Acquisition Targets: Strategically identify and evaluate/ prioritize potential veterinary clinic acquisition opportunities within the designated region.
  • Lead Generation and Relationship Building: Develop and maintain strong relationships with industry contacts and key stakeholders to generate high-quality acquisition leads.
  • Engage with Prospective Sellers: Cultivate relationships with potential sellers through various channels, including in-person meetings, meals, and industry events, to foster trust and build rapport.
  • Local Events & Marketing Campaigns: Plan, coordinate, and execute local marketing initiatives and events to attract new leads and drive acquisition opportunities.
  • Industry Presence: Actively participate in local veterinary trade shows and industry events, representing CVP and identifying new acquisition prospects.
  • Value Proposition Communication: Clearly and persuasively communicate CVP’s value proposition to potential sellers, non-sellers, independent practice owners, and other industry professionals.
  • Prospect Qualification: Assess key attributes of potential acquisition targets, including business goals, needs, timeline, and decision-making processes, to ensure alignment with CVP’s strategic objectives.
  • Presenting to the Deal Committee: Prepare and present qualified prospects to the CVP Deal Committee, effectively communicating why each prospect is a strong fit for CVP’s portfolio.
  • Negotiation Skills: Effectively negotiate and win attractive deals both self-sourced or represented by a 3rd party broker/advisor.
  • M&A Process Support: Guide prospects through the entire M&A process—from initial contact and document collection to negotiations and finalizing the deal—ensuring a seamless experience.
  • CRM and Data Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date prospect information in CRM tools and reporting systems, ensuring all data is captured and easily accessible for internal teams.
  • Regular Reporting: Participate in regular business development meetings to report on progress, highlight successful activities, and plan upcoming initiatives within your region.
  • Market Monitoring: Stay informed on competitive activity, market shifts, and industry trends within the region to adjust strategy and stay ahead of competition.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with internal teams, including operations, legal, and finance, to drive deals to completion and ensure smooth transitions.

 

 

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 5+ years of experience in business development, sales related jobs in veterinary healthcare industry 
  • Experience in Veterinary industry sales with strong Rolodex is preferred
  • Veterinary practice acquisitions experience and residence in territory of responsibility is preferred 
  • Understanding of basics of accounting and financial analysis

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to travel multiple times per month on short notice
  • Will need to spend a significant amount of time in market connecting with potential sellers and industry professionals
