Summary
Works with other members of the technical writing team to deliver medical/scientific writing and editing services within the Department of Gastrointestinal Medicine (GIMO). Impacts the delivery of editorial services within the institution.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
CLINICAL RESEARCH PROTOCOL SUPPORT - 65%
Provide day-to-day assistance and support to the faculty in tasks relating to investigator-initiated clinical trial, retrospective, and laboratory protocol development, writing, and editing.
Compose and abstract medical and scientific information for protocol preparation.
Provide review and proofreading support for protocols and related documents to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
Assist the GIMO regulatory team in coordinating regulatory document preparation between the industry sponsor, faculty member, central institutional consent editing team, and institutional FDA submissions office.
Prepare laboratory manuals providing logistical instructions for research biospecimen (blood, tumor, stool) collection, processing, and transport.
Prepare protocol amendments.
Track task status and outstanding details for ongoing protocol development projects and assist faculty in completing tasks requiring their attention as needed.
Provide support to the GIMO regulatory, finance, and clinical teams to confirm trial details, ensure timely submission of clinical trial-related documents, and expedite the protocol review and activation process.
Draft responses to queries during the initial protocol review and approval process.
Orchestrate collaborative editing and version tracking/control.
Maintain knowledge of the clinical trials process and basic medical terminology.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Teams, and PowerPoint) and reference management software is required.
Must be able to write and communicate with clarity in English.
GRANT AND MANUSCRIPT SUPPORT - 30%
Gather information from subject matter experts and published scientific literature to assist in writing manuscripts, grant proposals, and other documents.
Provide copyediting for grammar, style, consistency, word choice, content, organization, and narrative flow for manuscripts, grant proposals, and other documents written by department faculty and staff.
Interpret and apply instructions from funding agencies or target journals (for grant proposals and manuscripts, respectively) to ensure compliance of all submitted documents.
Abstract medical and scientific information to create summaries for different audiences and purposes.
Assist in analyzing scientific data and translating the information presented into clear and concise text.
Must understand the scientific method and its application.
DEPARTMENTAL INITIATIVES - 5%
Assist in building and maintaining an online shared departmental writing and editing resource, including a library of materials, boilerplate text, and templates needed during the protocol and grant writing processes.
Assist in writing letters of support and assembling faculty appointments.

Education Required - Bachelor's degree in English or related field.
Experience Required - Two years experience as a writer/editor. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
Preferred Experience: Oncology, clinical laboratory, clinical trial and/or grant writing.
