Job Summary

The Promise Zone Research Connection (PZRC) was formed in 2016 by a group of residents to address power imbalances in researcher and resident partnerships for place-based research. The PZRC is made up of Promise Zone residents, community stakeholders, and researchers with a shared commitment to increase dialogue, transparency, and equity in research conducted in the West Philadelphia Promise Zone. Given the group’s mission of addressing research mistrust, the PRZC created its Community Research Review Board (CRRB) subcommittee in April 2022 which focuses on the evaluation of studies proposed to occur in the community and is comprised of West Philadelphia community members and institutional allies.

Essential Functions

  • This per diem position for community members serving on the CRRB is supported by a two-year project funded by the Barra Foundation Catalyst Grant to support the organizational development and operations of the PZRC; it involves the following responsibilities: - (Essential)
  • Complete a review of all study materials before a scheduled session with a researcher. Approximately two weeks before a review session, CRRB members will receive a set of documents that they will need to read. These documents relate to the study that will be discussed at the upcoming review meeting. CRRB Members are expected to review these materials (e.g., study proposal, study instruments, recruitment plan, etc.) with attention to areas such as community engagement, community relevance, tangible benefits to the community, partnerships, and cultural humility. As part of this work they will do in advance of the review session, CRRB members should also begin to formulate questions that they would like the researcher to address during the review session. - (Essential)
  • Participate in researcher review sessions which are approximately 90min in duration and can occur in-person or remotely (session dependent). CRRB members should arrive on time and stay for the duration of the meeting, actively listen to the information that is presented, and consider the strengths and challenges of the study using the domains outlined on the comment form. It will also be important for CRRB members to bring any prepared concerns or questions with them after their review of the materials, share their expertise about the information that is presented, and provide feedback to the researchers. CRRB members active engagement in the review session enhances equity in research that is conducted in West Philadelphia and helps to build collaborative relationships with local research institutions.
  • Complete all post-session documentation following a session with a researcher. CRRB Members will be expected to submit completed comment forms within one week of a review session (either via hard copy or emailing an electronic PDF file). They will also be expected to submit the post-session survey which they will receive either electronically or via hard copy (according to their preference) within one week of receiving that request.
