About the Job

The Marketing Strategist is a part of the Marketing and Communications team and is a key member of Account Services, responsible for managing a variety of reputation marketing projects and managing the marketing vendor program, including consulting with University units on vendors that meet University Relation’s brand standards and marketing goals. This role will report to the University Relations Account Services Director.


This is a remote position. Please note, we are not offering H-1B or Green Card sponsorship for this position.


Job Duties

Marketing Project Management 55%

  • Works with collaborators and clients to gather and document project requirements for a wide variety of marketing projects, such as paid advertising, annual reputation marketing campaigns and unit-specific marketing programs.
  • Provides strategic direction to ensure approach and resource recommendations meet project and client needs.
  • Determines appropriate channels to fulfill a business need or address a challenge.
  • Communicates project progress with UR team leaders; capture feedback and approvals.
  • Identifies and resolves barriers to meeting project objectives.
  • Leads project process in a project management system, providing status reports through the project lifecycle.
  • Works across UR teams, e.g. SEO, social media, creative, to ensure expertise is applied to achieve project goals.
  • Collaborates with the Measurement & Analytics team to establish and promote measurement principles for all projects; provides subject matter expertise for analyses and reports.
  • Establishes strong working relationships and regular contact with University communicators and external entities.

Vendor Management Support 30%

  • Consults with units to identify alignment and efficiency opportunities for critical metrics, media, creative concept development, asset production, and complex video advertising delivered by agencies.
  • Communicates with agencies, and approved vendors/freelancers in partnership with Brand Strategist to ensure they are aware of and will enforce the UMN brand policies and standards. Provides additional brand support as needed.
  • Serves as liaison with marketing agencies of record for client projects.
  • Working with the approved vendor/freelancer list, consults with and guides clients on how to access appropriate vendors to meet their project objectives; serves as a liaison on behalf of clients as needed.

Professional Development 10%

  • Completes professional development, education, and training activities, consistent with running the position's responsibilities.
  • Completes continued learning and development appropriate to work duties to pursue individual, unit, and institutional success.
  • Stays current on project management, paid advertising, and freelance management trends.

Other duties as assigned 5%

  • Assists with other marketing or digital projects as they arise.


Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in communications, journalism, marketing, art, or related field
  • Six years of professional marketing experience, including project management for sophisticated marketing communications projects
  • Familiarity with project management principles and tools such as Asana


Salary Range: $79,000-$82,000 depending on qualifications and experience
